kx7r and 9800 pro.

Well I got a 9800 pro and installed it. It doesn't work. There must be a compatability issue with the motherboard. I had no display at all, just a black screen. I tried everything, no go. So I took the card back to Aria and they tested it, it worked perfectly. I came out of there with a NF7S and my working 9800. I'm just about to rip the PC apart. I may be gone some time, Shorty, stand by the phone please.
See you later guys.

Dont forget that when you swap motherboards you have to do a fresh install of windows.

I just came off the phone from Sir Bothered.. and told him the same thing mate :)

It's keeps just having a fit everytime he tries to boot an existing installation of Windows. A no-no. Gonna try a repair install first (at Sir's request) :)

He should have a screen tho. It should at least get to the XP splash screen before it gets pissed at a new motherboard.

The KX7 only supports 4x graphics and the 9800 is an 8x card. Could that be a problem. Try clearing the CMOS.

That point is now moot, Marc, since he now has a modern mobo to muck with.:) A repair install should work, if those damn Via drivers from the previous install don't mess him up. I had 1 Win2K install that went through 2 BX boards and 2 Via boards before I finally wiped it and started over from scratch by running a repair install when switching out the mobo each time.

He said he has No display whatsoever. He is not even getting to the point where XP is trying to load the drivers. There is a problem way before that.

repair install always works for me. there's no need to do a totally fresh install. it's not windows 95 anymore people.

Kanezfan, after about 5-6 repair installs, XP gets REAL funky. It runs slow, crashes, and just generally acts strange. I'd say you can get away with 2, maybe 3 repair installs before you really need to wipe it and reinstall from scratch.

Last week i swapped a Epox 8KRA2 (KT600/Sata) for my Epox 8K9A3+ (KT400/HPT374) (After ghosting the HD of course for backup)

WINXP never even hiccuped, it just booted, detected a new device or two, rebooted and kept on folding. I think if you keep your mobo upgrade to the same Company/Chipset family, WinXP will be happier

well 5 or 6 is a little extreme geeky (wait i forgot who i was talking to :D) all i'm saying is people are a little too quick to jump the gun and reinstall everything. I went from a kr7a with a ti4600 to a kx7r with a 9500 pro, to an A7N8X with same 9500 pro, I think i did a repair install twice in like a two year span.

WinXP doesn't care if you switch motherboards that use the same chipset drivers.

you talking to me thrax? cause it sure as hell cared and refused to boot up all those times i switched motherboards. i did a repair install going from the kr7 to the kx7, and another one going from the kx7 to the a7n8x.

I can see it certainly caring when it went from the KX7 to the a7n8x.

But the KR7 to KX7 perplexes me as I did roughly the same switch without a trouble.

Yea when I went from an AN7 back to an NF7-s there was no need for a repair install :-/

i thought it wouldn't care either as it was only going from a kt266a to a kt333 chipset, i was surprised too. one thing i'll never understand, i once went from a gf2mx to a ti4600, same drivers right? I still had to reinstall the drivers. anyhow, sorry for hijacking your thread bothered.

Sorry about that guys, it's a long story. I got the nf7s and 9800 pro installed, no boot. Had to do a repair install of xp to get going. I've been reading this thread but couldn't post, when ever I did I just got 'page cannot be displayed' Turned out this morning that that was down to good ole' NTL. Anyway, it's sorted now. Both PCs up and running. I made a couple of phone calls to Shorty and he was a great help, I've said it before but the fact there are people here who I may never meet who will go out of there way to help you is just brilliant. Thanks Shorty, many thanks and thank you all for the advice. Short-Media? it works, it really does.

Yes but in desperation I tried it without. That was the only time ANYTHING came on the screen, it said ' you have not connected the power lead' in a nice red box.

With the nf7s installed it did, it got to the windows screen then restarted, round and round.

At Aria, when I took the card back, I asked them to test it. They did, they also ran it at 4x with no problem. It just wouldn't work with the kx7.
