Building outside the case

I've gathered up enough parts to put together another computer. I'd like to try a couple different set ups, but don't want to stuff everything into the case if I don't have to.
Can I build this up, out on a counter top? Do I have to do any special grounding or anything? Do I need to put the MB on stand offs, so it's not laying on the counter?
Any other things I need to look out for?
Thanks;
Dragstk
PS> I'll keep the cats off the counter while it's running ;D

    As long as the counter isn't metal, then you shouldn't have any trouble.

    My latest "toy" is sitting on my desk, actually...

    Cool, a buildin' I will go!
    Is that a dual processor set up you have there?
    Thanks;

    Yeah, it's an old Tyan board. Intel 440GX chipset, dual Slot 1 with Upgradeware slotkets, and 2 1GHz PIIIs @ 928MHz (124MHz FSB... board limitation). It does have an AGP slot, believe it or not, but it has 2 PCI slots above the AGP slot, which is why it looks like the video card is in a PCI slot. It's a nice board, albiet far from cutting edge technology. Onboard SCSI, LAN, & (crappy) audio, 6 PCI, AGP, 1 ISA, 2 ATX power connectors. My only complaints are that the CPU slots are way too close to one another (even 1u HSFs have trouble getting enough air to cool the top CPU), which I solved by putting that huge blower assembly I built a while back on it, and the fact that the onboard IDE is only ATA-33, but that's due to its age, so...
