Motherboard related problem?

Hey all.
Before I ask my question let me post my relavent specs:
NF7-S rev. 2
2500+ (stock speeds)
Vantec Aeroflow
1 stick of 512mb Buffalo Tech ram
Windows XP Pro (updated all the way).

OK, so just about every time I run AOE my PC will crash and give me that annoying siren. This only happens when running AOE, none of my other programs. I mean, I can totally bog down my system with all sorts of different things and it won't crash but as soon as I open AOE I'm a goner. I've reformated to see if there was some slimy little program killing me but I still have the problem. Anyone know what's up with this problem?

Are there any patches for the game? What video card?

The game is running the most current patches. I'm running an Abit GF4 TI 4200 card.

Hmm. Have you tried updating to the latest nVidia drivers?

I'm running the windows supplied drivers version 5.2.1.6. Is there a more recent version that I should be running? Or are you talking about the MB drivers?

any way you can check what your temps are???? that'd be nice, im sure abit has a temp monitoring program you can download (instead of setting up MBM)

Yes, there is a more recent version you should be running. You never want to use Microsoft's supplied drivers, unless you absolutely have to.

    Use these graphics drivers:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_53.03

    And these chipset drivers:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_3.13

Between the two of them, they should take care of your problem and make the computer noticeably faster.

    Try updating your bios.

    Download this : ftp://ftp.abit.com.tw/pub/download/fae/flashmenu120.exe

Make sure you close anything that you have running. Then click one live update or something.

    Here's a temp-monitoring program too: ftp://ftp.abit.com.tw/pub/download/utilities/hw_doctor/nf7/HWM_NF7V16A.EXE

Check the heatsink and make sure it's seated correctly.

Well, I updated the drivers and the bios as suggested and everything seems to be working fine now. Thanks!

I tested the memory too, but man, does that take a long time!

Yep, first rule of computing. Patch, patch and flash!

By the way, big fan of all the AOE series. Great game! Glad you got it sorted.

Seems like lots of folks here have good taste in RTS games. We need a S-M AOE match sometime. :ninja:

Dude, don't rub salt in the wound. I want to go, but there is no way I will be able to afford it. I can't even make rent let alone jet off to the U.S. I want more than anything to give you all a live performance of the Short-Media song with Dan on guitar. I want more than anything to share a nice cold alcoholic beverage with all you guys. But sadly, it isn't realistic. So boulder throwing, at least for now, will have to stay an online affair.
