Look how much better the bottom end is with this baby instead of a Elite 1600. Like night and day.

This is done with 4 mismatched drives. They were just the first 4 I snagged to play around.

    Okay, that's it! I'm officially starting a campaign to get you banned from these forums my friend. I'm usually completely satisfied with my Silicon Image 3112 controller and my 2 Raptors, but every time you post your incredibly brilliant ATTO's, they just lose their credibility. I wish you nothing but 5400rpm ATA33 till the day you, erm.. stop benching!

    The huge improvement isnt the top end score though that most look at. But the bottome end with the small writes used to start out at like 2800. And then would spike real high after you got to like teh 64k segment. I almost kissed 300,000 once before but I had a 4 chanbel controll and like 10 or 12 drives spread across all four channels.

    This is four mismatched drives I just chunked on to play. And.... This controller uses sticks of DDR not sdram and it only has 128mb in it right now. Controller will allow 1Gb of ddr cache.

    :wow: How many DIMM slots, does it take regular non-ecc/unregistered RAM, and how much did it cost you?

    One memory slot. It needs to be non-registered/unbuffered ecc. pc1600 and up works.

    The controller should run about 700 to 750 new in the box even on price watch. Intel OEM's them and calls them something like srcu42x I think it was. And I found a guy on ebay with a couple brand new Intel versions in the box with 128mb ram for $400. I sold my Elite 1600 and a spare battery backup for it and had to cough up the other $150 out of my pocket. But this is an LSI 320-2x. Its got a lot faster cpu and memory to get the crap in and out of the cache faster and its pci-x 133 also as well as u320.

    I want one! 'nough said. It's quite funny actually, I still can't imagine myself saying the line "I've just spent £120 upgrading my disk controller with more memory". I guess you can take the guy out the HPT372, but not the HPT372 out the guy. ;D

    Figure I spend the $400 you guys spend on video cards and sounds cards on disks and controllers. To each his own.

    I see the controller has worked out!! Bloody hell! What were the drives you stuck on it for that?? Mismatched?? I know you have a crapload of those Atlas kicking around.. got any 15k's to pipe onto this badboy? < grin > Im sure you could find some ...

    Robin's gonna kill me for promoting you to do more things.. but .. I wanna see what this can do with 4 matched drives and 1gb of DDR slung in it .. hehehehehehe

    DDR400 is a yes but OC is a "no".

    I was scarfing on eBay for a 512mb stick and now I may just wait and get a 1gb.

    It changes running it through the onboard cache completely. With the Elite the cpu/memory became a funnel that held you back on stuff needing STR as the new fast drives scored better running it with direct I-O. The atto test sits inside the cache now. I score the same on a single drive as with those four as we are not testing the drives anymore but rather the cpu/memory on the controller. I still have some probs to sort out but for just throwing it on and running a quick atto that showed some potential.

    And no 15k drives. I am in the process of selling the last three I had. Trying to purge all the u160 ones and just keep u320's here. The 15k's are so marginally faster for desktop work I do better with the 10k IV's for the money. On a multiuser server the 15k's are really needed. You see huge jumps in something like i-o-meter when you dialup the workloads with the lower latency but on the desktop .... I'll save that cash for other toys.

    I would love to see what this bad boy could do with four u320 drives per-channel.
