at my morning job, they've declared that I should uninstall all IM programs from all computers. while I don't have a problem with this, I refuse to not have AIM installed on my computer. after all how am I gonna waste all that time right :D so what I'm looking for is some kind of software that allows me to run AIM without it showing up in my systray. furthermore, I would like it to have the ability to, at the push of a keystroke or a combination of keystrokes, vanish from view while still staying running and connected. does that make sense? If I could write in visual basic i'd jst write the stupid thing myself, but I'm sure there's gotta be something like this already know? I mean how else do you guys keep in touch with all your chicks at work right?

The easiest way I've found is to just quit your day job and start your own business. That way, you can stay on AIM all day if you want. :D

Can't you use a different client and just trust that your boss won't recognize the icon?

I mean... I guess I could... but that just wouldn't be as 1337 you know what I mean? the thing is, when you're talking to someone, the window flashes right? just about all IM proggies I've used, the chat window flashes. so do you know of any that let you chat in peace? i mean what's the world coming to when you're not allowed to waste time at work!

Well I know with MSN Plus you can press a key and the MSN icon will change into a small computer and nothing will pop up. I think thats basically what you are looking for AIM. Have you tried Trillian? Its something different. Maybe.

You can selectively hide icons in the system tray in XP. For previous versions of Windows there are other icon-hiding programs. Or maybe just change the icon?

As far as the "quick minimize" thing, there used to be a lot of programs flying around to do that. I believe there was one called "Boss Key" which was triggered by one of your Function keys. I'll look around.

What you want is a program with a "Boss key". I think GAIM can do that. You can also connect to other IM networks.

There used to be some neat Mozilla/Gecko program that would let you use mouse gestures to display/hide the browser window inside the window of other programs, eg: Excel. I don't recall what it was called (GhostZilla, perhaps?) but if there's something like that for AIM, then that might be the solution you're seeking.

Last job I had I was forced to take Mozilla off my desktop and use IE. That sucked.
