Powercolor 9700pro help

I just bought a 9700 pro, and it's acting a little sluggish. When I startup my computer, my desktop loads slower than when I had a 9600xt, and that seems strange. I have the latest drivers (d/le'd them yesterday), and it's still a little slow. I have an Athlon 2800+ 2.08GHz, and scored 21532 on Aquamark3, which is less than expected after dropping $175 on the card.

When i go to SMARTGART, it says my AGP speed is OFF and the fast write is off. When I try to put it on 4x or 8x, it restarts, and it goes back to OFF. Is there a way to fix that?

You can try changing it to 8x in the BIOS.

What m/board do you have. My 9800 had the same problem with my NF7-s until I installed the nvidia chipset drivers.

They worked! Now I'm at 35,795 on Aquamark3, 8x AGP speed, and I'm gonna OC it soon. Thanks all!!!

One other thing. Go into the ATi control panel and turn VPU recover OFF if you haven't already done so.

Ok, VPU recover is off... but isn't it bad to have it off?

Also, I have the Nvidia system utility installed, and am trying to use the OC option. I can't get the AGP bus speed to go up without it either going back to 66Mhz, or getting a BSOD. Any suggestions?

A2J, because I've both heard of and seen problems with it. For example, it makes the fillrate go through the floor. When you install the control panel, it's on by default. When windows reboots the next time, the transition from the login screen to the desktop takes forever; it loads like one line at a time. I've had this happen on my 9700 Pro, a friend's 9700 Pro, my 8500, my 9000, my 7500, my 7500m, and a friend's 8500. I've always found that VPU recover makes it run slower, and in some instances, makes it less stable.

Turning it off does no harm what-so-ever to the best of my knowledge.
