We're all going to be drafted... (US)

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
It appears that those of us in the US may become exponentially more likely to be drafted than non-computer-savvy counterparts.

[blockquote]The government is taking the first steps toward a targeted military draft of Americans with special skills in computers and foreign languages.[/blockquote]

    In 2 day's I'm 39, I really doubt I'm at risk.

I really doubt that. I'm in the IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve) component right now awaiting ETS. I haven't been called up yet I'm in a highly deployable MOS, Military Police. IRR gets called up before the draft. The military is spread thin but not in any conditions that warrant the draft.

omgz lets all freak out, some online news source weve never heard of before reported we're all gonna be drafted for liking computers and also had this for a story description
Congress shows little support for effort to draw skilled Americans

SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT

There have been tons of BS stories floating around about the draft playing upon peoples' fears. It's not the time to freak out. I would almost be willing to place a wager that a significant amount of troops will be pulled out and home in time for election year banter.

I'm as safe as can be. If they saw my performance in any of the UT battles they would consider drafting me to be tantamount to surrender.;D

I haven't played Battle Field 1942. Heck, I didn't play the first 1941 Battle Fields either. I haven't played a DOOM/Quake-type game in probably 2 years. I've never fired a gun. If you're tantamount to surrender, I guess I'm tantamount to, umm, erm, well, what's worse than surrender but not as bad as traitor? ;D

A Pentagon official familiar with personnel issues stressed that the armed forces are against any form of conscription but acknowledged that the groundwork is already under way at the Selective Service System.

It would take legislation from both houses of Congress. Don't count on the weenies enacting such unless it was a very dire situation for the country.
