Laptop Temps????

edited March 2004 in Hardware
My roommate's laptop has been acting real screwy (for a while now.) So, I am looking it over when I put it together that it might be a temperature related issue. I install MBM and lo and behold the peak temp is 89C???

It's a P4 2.2 (probably desktop chip, not -m variety.) What can he do to fix it? It's a compaq and is still under warranty. As you might imagine the main problem is random shutdowns...

Doesn't surprise me, especially since it's a Compaq. My Sager NP5620 (2.4P4) hits 60*C when folding, and that's after a bunch of mods I've done.

The best thing to do is to take the CPU access cover off, remove the heatsink, and clean it out. Barring that, use canned air, but make sure that you don't let the canned air spin the fans, or they'll spin up to like 15,000rpms, make a really neat noise, and never work again.

There has to be a way to keep the laptop from turning itself off. It's not even under full load. I'm not comfortable opening it up for him.

    Is there anything to do???

Make sure the LT is on a flat surface, and nothing is obstructing the vent. You could also try to return it, saying it randomly quits working.

DO NOT keep it from turning itself off. The reason it's doing that is because it's overheating. The only way to fix it is to clean out the heatsink. Laptops, especially ones with desktop CPUs, have very little extra cooling capacity; consequently, they don't tolerate dust buildup very well at all. If you don't want to open it, blow out the heatsink using canned air. You don't need to open it to do that.

Funny thing, i just returned my 2 year old compaq laptop to radio shack for the same damn thing.. They were proud to inform me that it would cost 128.35 and i was like fruck that! You tell me what it needs and ill do it!.. Well they said no, so now i have to let compaq fix it.. (read let compaq make it worse)...

Betcha it had the same problem. People don't maintain their laptops, and they need it even more than desktops do.

Yeah. I actually just take the heatsink out of mine, take the fans off, and rinse it off once a month or so. Dry it off, put new thermal compound on the CPU, put it back in, and I'm done. I also end up taking the entire laptop apart about once every 3 months to clean off the GPU heatspreader and stuff. Not a big deal, especially now that I've figured out how to do it. I just wish I hadn't broken the PCMCIA slot in the process... (who knew that thing had to be screwed down?) :grumble:

Because you had to send it back to Compaq to fix it.
