Not booting after CMOS settings saved;

edited March 2004 in Hardware
I've been messing with a KR7A-RAID at the Sarcnet office. It seems to work fine, until I go to save settings to the CMOS. Once I do (even just resaving the default settings) the board refuses to POST, until I clear the CMOS.

Has anyone heard of such a problem? Any ideas aside from a new BIOS IC?

    Try replacing the CMOS battery.

Probably a CR2032(old number, for a non-Lith version, have seen EverReady packs with that number on, avoid that code as cells will be 2 or more years old with that code and that is half the cell's lifetime on shelf) or DL2032 (Duracell and Toshiba Lith version code, sometimes Energizer packed EverReady's have used it also) or BR2032 (Rayovac number), about $1.00 each to $2.00 each. I get them from Jameco or Cyberguys, about 80 cents each in 5-10 qty, less in 25-100 qty. I buy in 25s or multiple 10-packs for a volume discount. Cyberguys has 5-packs-- JameCo's average more recent mfr & thier Part Number is 14162 for those (Toshiba or Rayovac Lith cells get shipped).

Walmart and KMart and Home Depot have them if stuck for a place to get one quick. Watches can use them if big cell used, and some simple non-digital cameras can use them. They are three volt cells.

What would the battery have to do with saving CMOS settings causing a no-post?

Well, I suppose it's either try that or pitch it...

No idea, but which would you rather try first- a $2 battery, or a $20 BIOS ROM?
  • edited March 2004
Well, chances are Brian would just buy a new board before getting a new BIOS... :p

I'll just get a new bat. tommrow for the CMOS and give it a try. I want to get this machine built and out of the way...

It's more economical at the scale of business to just buy a new mobo than to try a $2 this and a $20 that for nothing. :) But give the CMOS battery a shot anyway..... :)

Did you clear the CMOS in accordance with the instruction on page 2-13 of the manual?

You need to power down, and remove the stand-by power (just yank the cord.) Then move the COMS jumper to pins 2 & 3 for s couple of seconds. Then return the jumper to pins 1 & 2, reconnect power, and try booting up.

What are you talking about? What manual?

I have to clear the CMOS if I want to POST at all after saving settings (I always do it with the power cord disconnected).

My KR7A used to do the same thing. Never did figure out why either. I can't offer you a solution but at least I can verify that you aren't the only one :)

The manual linked off the product's page at the Abit site: http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/manual.php?categories=1&model=87

That'd be fine by me! But first I'd have to get it working, because as of right now it's useless.

I found an entirely dead KT7A Rev. 1.1 too (it wont POST, no matter what).

What are you doing with these things, Brian?

Pfah! After sifting through our megajunk pile with your own hands, do you really need to ask that?

So how did you make out with this SMJ?

Well, the new battery didn't do anything. I'm attempting to RMA the sucker before I just pitch it.

Unless you guys have some other ideas...?

Nope, if you ensured you did the CMOS clear properly, and the new battery didn't help... I agree: RMA it. The Abit forums have plenty of posts about similar problems on various motherboards. Likely a bad BIOS chip.
