If the fan's spinning the wrong way, it's possible the pcb fan power connector is on the wrong way round, but it should be oriented to fit only one way.

If air is flowing up, it's working the wrong way. Some DC fans will blow the opposite way on opposite polarity, some won't. It's worth checking, anyway, you may have to swap the polarity of your video card fan wires.

Note of caution: A very few fans will be destroyed when wires connected wrong way round. Not many though.

I've just bought an ATI 9800 Pro, price dropped to £135.00 for one day only at Komplett (UK supplier) so I snapped one up. I expect the price to drop even further during coming weeks or months with the coming of PCI Express cards.

The cooling on the ATI card is not very good at all, so I've ordered an Arctic VGA cooler for it.

As for Sapphire, I had a 9200 DOA, fitted it and it took out a sound card and motherboard. Managed to RMA it, but the damage was done.

I've also heard quite a few bad stories about Sapphire, one USA guy could only reach customer service on a UK phone line, for instance.

They're made cheap and often only use passive cooling where there should be a fan. I've personally had it with Sapphire, OK when they work I suppose but there seems to be a high return rate.

So if Sapphire are not that good (even though I have heard the opposite) what card would you recommend?

Nvidia and ATI are supposed to be launching their new cards this month so the 9800pro's should come down.

Doraemon: It's a little confusing, isn't it? I speak only from my own experience with that brand and from comments I've read on Forums. Yet on the other hand I've read lots of stuff praising Sapphire cards. Still seems like a bit of a gamble to me though.

What brands? ATI themselves, which I have, but imo it will need better cooling; Asus, Hercules, all good, imo. Choice seems to going down though, not so many manufacturers seem to be supplying them now, maybe they're winding down production in preparation for PCI Express sales push?

I just got a 9800 pro (that's how this thread got started) and it's working great. I can't speak for others' experience, but I've owned two Sapphire cards now, and they've both performed perfectly.

I'm also the proud owner of a Sapphire 9800 pro and havent had any problems whatsoever.
In fact, fitted with a stock retail AMD hsf I have it clocked @ 455/375 and she boots along quite nicely. :p:buck:

I'm also the owner of 2 sapphire cards and I love them. One is a 9500 that has been softmodded to a 9700 (Soon to be biosed flash, first to 9700 then to pro if the ram can handle it if I ever get around to it) and the other is a 9800 biosed to a 9800 pro. Both have been overclocked and tweaked and have been excellent.... Except that one time when I knocked a teeny little piece off of the 9500. That was bad till Prime got me in touch with microman who saved my rear end!!
