Dell two-timing Intel?

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
Dell, the only top-tier server company to have stuck completely with Intel chips, was caught in a seeming act of infidelity Wednesday, offering for sale on one of its Web sites a processor from Intel's archenemy AMD.

[blockquote]"There was an erroneous posting of a processor kit on that site today," the representative said. "It was intended to be posted to a single customer's Premier Page site...and it inadvertently was posted more broadly than that."

I really don't see the problem with Dell selling both. Would create competition and lower prices where I would guess Dell would win since they would be getting chips for a cheaper price.

It's probably a problem with some sort of contract w/ intel...intel sells dell chips @ low prices, dell can't sell anything other than intel.

Dell, HP, and IBM get a cutback from Intel for every Intel CPU they sell. None of them want to lose that money from Intel.

The problem is that Dell has always steadfastedly held to the notion that they will never sell AMD chips... Of course, they will eventually since the Opteron is superior in every way to the Xeon and the Itanic. But, Dell will be seen as having backpedalled on their word. Whatever. It's just another play in the big game.

    From the Inquirer:
The only thing currently saving Intel is that none of the Big Three -- Dell, HP, IBM -- have enterprise ready servers available for the Opteron...Intel does not have the goods nor will they have the goods to compete for nearly a year. Everyone else is going to be Opteron roadkill.

The Big 3 all have AMD computers but none that match the specs that the enterprise customers want. That is from the same paragraph btw.;)

All they have to do its take the risk and break away from Intel.
