DVD Drive

edited March 2004 in Hardware
HI! I'vee had this problem for a while now, hope someone in this Forum has the answer.

"I reformated my Presario900ap. Now I can read cd's but VERY slow and some of my CD-R's cannot be read at all DVD's are just out- it cannot be read."

""No disc in Drive" is what happens when I put a dvd in. I've installed Compaq's DVD software from the Compaq Download site hoping any missing drivers or decoders would be restored BUT it's useless. I'm now stuck with a very poor cd drive instead of a fast DVD drive.

How do I fix this???"

It sounds like the lens of your dvd player may be dirty...you can open up the drive and clean the lens with a dust free cloth of some type.

I'd go with what shwaip said.

If that doesn't help, make sure that DMA is enabled for both IDE channels.

Go into Device Manager under IDE Controllers, double-click the primary channel and go to "advanced settings". Do the same for the secondary.

If they are already running in DMA mode then it is something else. If not, and you can't make them go into DMA mode you will have to uninstall your DVD drive and let Windows find it again. XP turns off DMA after a certain number of unsuccessful tries at reading a bad disc. (Even if it's the discs fault, say trying to read a bad burn.) The only way I've found to fix it is to do the uninstall thingy and let Windows find it as a brand new drive.

If the suggestions above were implemented and didn't work, you can also try removing the DVD drive from the list in Device Manager. Remove, shut down your computer, restart, and let Windows redetect the drive and install the drivers fresh for you.

Do you know how to get to Device Manager?

Holy COW! I thought I'd try adding hardware option in control panel BUT this came up:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

    PIO = Programmed Input/Output = dog slow

Boot up in Safe Mode and uninstall all of your IDE devices and your IDE Controller. Reboot and let Windows find everything again.

profdlp- How do I boot up in Safe mode? I can only pres f10 in d beginning and dat gives u no option to start windows in safe mode.

Must I delete IDE in Safe Mode?

    DAM!

I managed to delete the 2 IDE devices + PC reinstalled it BUT I still can't play DVD despite all options are on DMA and none on PIO.

Is it possible that the DVD part of the lens is broken and CD-Drive is still functioning???

    :(

For safe mode hit F8 when you first start the comp, then pick it from the menu using the arrow keys.

It's possible your drive croaked, but before you give up you should check a few other things.

Can you try other software for DVD playback? (PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc)
Have you tried several different discs?
What does your Device Manager look like? Any other trouble spots?
    This is a notebook, right?

Try running the attached program, it will tell you your drives firmware:
