I've not had this for ages. I keep getting messenger pop ups but messenger service is turned off, there's nothing in start up, Search and destroy found nothing. I'm getting all sorts of nonsense, like this.

When you went into services to disable it, did you make sure you stopped it as well?

Definitely check to see if the messenger service is stopped and disabled. If you have previously disabled it, some malicious program may have reactivated it, or an XP system restore may have been run after the service was disabled, re-enabling it. Disable the system restore, shut off the messenger service, then re-enable system restore and create a new restore point.

If you are going to download a patch, get it from Microsoft itself, not from some spammer.

By the way, don't you have a firewall? It should be blocking these messages regardless of whether you have the messenger service enabled or not.

It is stopped but I did a system restore yesterday. Funnily enough I have rebooted in the last 15 minutes and they haven't come back. Strange. I'll just leave it alone for now and see what happens.

Just double check to make sure it's stopped *and* disabled. Perhaps the system restore restarted it.
