Throttling an IP's bandwidth LAN

edited April 2004 in Science & Tech
My little sister likes to keep Kazaa open, which in turn kills the UL speed for all the other machines in the house (Kazaa is only installed on one machine). I'd like to be able to give the machine 5-10KB/s outgoing traffic, while keeping the incoming traffic fully open.

Is there any easy way to do this?

I use Kazaa myself. Open up Kazaa and in the options, under advanced, you can limit the bandwidth spent on uploading files.

I hope that's Kazaa Lite. Otherwise, you need run anti-spayware at least once a day on that machine.

For one, dont share anything or the RIAA is going to be knocking on your door. Second I know the version I have/had before you can limit the number of Uploads at once, maybe even the bandwidth.

I tried using Kazaa Lite to throttle the speed, and it wouldn't work. Besides, I'd like something that would work with all apps.

Kazaa Lite -> Options -> Traffic -> Check 'Disable sharing of files with other users', and you'll never worry about that silly program sucking your upload again :)

Yeah, as templar said, that is the easiest way (I have to do it for my mom as she has now become an addict :rolleyes2). Another router (though obscenely more complicated) would be to set up QOS and conditioning on a Linux router/passthrough/switch, but that is a whole different story (though highly useful. My site and other services now have no effect on my internet activities... which is nice).

There's always someone trying Kazaa for the first time - not knowing all the STD's that come with it! :wow2:

As everyone else said, just turn off Sharing. Who cares about the other thiefs ;)

I believe that if others are nice enough to share their collection with me, I should be able to share it with others as well.

After all, if everyone checked that box, than the whole P2P idea would be somewhat pointless, dont ya think?

not sure if you're still looking for an answer thesmj, but if you can find NetLimiter anywhere (can't remember where i got it) you can install it on that machine and limit kazaa's upload. that's a terrible program btw hehe, get overnet :P

    It's risk vs. reward.

Do I want to risk myself for rewards I could get without the risk? No.
