Can anyone recommend a good low profile opteron-compatible HSF setup? It's got to fit in a 1U rackmount case.

:)

Well I ended up with this low-profile active cooler for our new opteron server.

I have to say, it's very nice. There was a minor shipping snafu, but the company apologized and upgraded me to priority overnight shipping free of charge. Now that's service :)

These guys have a lot of pretty sweet 1U equipment. If you ever thought about going rackmount (folding farm, anyone?), this is the place to look.

Rackmount is a waste of money when building a farm. Too much money on a stupic piece of twisted metal that people call 'rails.' Cooling sucks as well.

    It's all about density, G!

you can fit way more machine into a certain physical space with rackmounting. It's not economical for regular users, but if you have a closet for machines, you can either put 6-8 regular computers in there, or 20-30 1U rackmount boxes in there - same space, more machine :)

Its not the space that will stop me from building more machines. 20-30 AMDs in a small closet???? Only if there are 2 ACs for the one closet.

But for some people, it IS the space that stops people. Plus, some people prefer the sleek look of a rack rather than a mishmash of open and half built mid and full tower cases. To each his own.

For me, I would love to have a rackmount farm.
