Ok, yea yea... I know its Intel but a friend of mine was wondering if it was any good, he was considering it for an upgrade from his 266 board.
At 45 bucks is it a pretty diecent board.
Thanks,

It really depends on what your friend wants/needs and can afford. Is he using the onboard video only? Does he game at all? If so, then i would choose a radeon 9100 board like this one...
Does it have to be Matx? If not, then a via pt880 board has a lot of room for improvement. This MSI one here is suppose to be the best...
He's not too worried bout upgradeing....
He already has a decient video card that is better than any of the OB graphics...
He's got the Audigy and nics and stuff so he's just looking to by the board and the CPU cause he'll just use his DDR that is in his old board.
He's just looking to get a bit of a boost from is 266 1.4CPU.
I was just courious about the intel SIS chipset and stability and any problems.
I assume that because its intel that even though SIS is the chipset that they had to follow pretty close to the intel mold?
Seems like it might be a decient deal then. His plan is this board and then a 2.0ghz 533 off ebay for 40-50bucks so he figures he's got a 100 bucks in a decient upgrade...
Right?

Anyway, for $100 total it's not bad. I had an old soyo board with a sis chipset that was rock solid.
I still think he should spend a little more, say $60-$70 bucks, on a mobo that would allow him a future cpu/ram/hdd upgrade path. He could still use his 2.0ghz/400fsb cpu from ebay and his ddr266 ram for now....but better components when he wants and can afford.
Here are a couple of links....both have dual channel ddr400 RAM, 2 x SATA RAID, 800fsb ht support, etc....
asrock P4S55FX+ (SiS 655FX) for $59...
abit vt-7 (via pt880) for $69...
I don't think the incremental upgrade from 1.4/266 to 2.0/533 is worth the effort. Your friend really should consider spending an additional $100 for a better upgrade. Fix him up with one of the motherboards mentioned in the post right above this; couple that with a P4C 2.4Ghz HT 800MHz FSB CPU. Now that would be an instantly noticeable, real performance boost. Prices are coming down nearly daily on the P4Cs as Intel preps the market for their loser P4 Prescotts. The P4C 2.4 will provide very good performance with the stock Intel cooler.
