omegasearch - michel

Hi there.
I got a new HP Pavillion recently, running WinXP. Because it comes with lots of softwares pre-installed, including (unactive) WildTangent (but no signs of Omegasearch yet), I let Spybot check it out. Immediately after the 1st time I ran Spybot, my IE got hijacked by Omegasearch.
I followed http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=235 steps, but under Safe Mode there's nothing wrong I can detect. Can anybody help?

    I'll be honest, nothing looks bad in there except for

    I would kill that, reboot, rerun HiJackThis, and see if anything new comes up.

    I've tried to get rid of : R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://omegasearch.com/passthrough/...//www.libe.com/ , but after reboot it always comes back. I've end up suspecting one of the hp processes to do so. I'll ask their support what they think about it next week.

    to be honest so much of that stuff looks to be hp specific that it makes it hard to single out the omegasearch process. i'll try looking harder later, but there'll be a lot of things to look up

    I found in google http://www.quantum3d.com/PDF/VTree_q3d.pdf which mentions vttimer. I must admit I don't see what's this got to do in my pc, but HP isn't giving much details about the softwares they provide :(.
    Is it safe to remove that thing, and roll back System Restore in case this process isn't related to omegasearch?

    I would leave that vttimer then, it appears to be related to your graphics system somehow.

    So, did you reboot in Safe Mode then kill the entry that Mr. Kwitko recommended?

    The weird thing is that under safe mode, R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://omegasearch.com/passthrough/...//www.libe.com/ don't appear in the list... So I can't delete it. It must be one of the processes activated in normal mode that adds it.
    Otherwise I've asked HP about it. they told me the PC is delivered as is. They're not interested in supporting the case...

    Well guys, I might have wasted everybody's time. The ugly thing is gone now.
    To make it short : under safe mode, I was logging as "administrator" thinking it's more appropriate. I just logged as "öwner" for a try, and Hijackthis showed : R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://omegasearch.com/passthrough/...//www.libe.com/ in the log list.
    I quiete happily deleted the line, and now the system is clear in normal mode. :)

    Anyway, thanks all for your advices. Much appreciate.
