DVRs To Get Storage Boost

edited April 2004 in Science & Tech
Maxtor and Seagate Technology have plans to add external hard drives to DVRs in a bid to give consumers more storage capacity and ease potential headaches for cable and satellite network companies.
According to market research company In-Stat/MDR, the number of DVRs shipped worldwide grew from 1.3 million in 2002 to 3.7 million last year. Shipments will reach 8.3 million this year, according to In-Stat, partly because of a push by satellite broadcasters to promote the devices.

Or, you know, they could just add more drives internally, or start using bigger drives, and then have the external ports for expansion... but I mean seriously now, why can't they just have 4 ATA-100/133 connectors on the board? 8 300GB drives should be more than sufficient. And, it keeps people that don't know how to upgrade the thing from doing it, or at least it keeps the repair shops in business... :D

I have a 40GB tivo model myself. When I get time and some nerve I'll take the plunge and do the hard drive tivo hack and upgrade the hard drive myself to a fat 200GB or something. The external connector on the new models isn't a bad idea at all though.
