First of all, use SCSI, not IDE, and then you can go with external enclosures. If you absolutely MUST have IDE, there are IDE RAID enclosures with scsi interfaces, but if 240 73GB drives doesn't give you the storage capacity you're looking for, you may have other issues... ;)

And actually, Hitachi just introduced a 300GB/10,000rpm SCSI drive that should have sustained data transfer rates of >140MB/s.

    Second, read this:

Raptors bad. They're slower than SCSI.

M systems makes solid state ide drives, upto 16gb IIRC.

If you want hardcore storage, and external scsi raid tower with as many discs as you need. I have seen upto 16 drives in person, and I know they make them much larger too.

I'll post a few more hold up:

The hard drive compartment at the bottom of these cases is seperated by a thin wall of aluminum and cooled seperately if you take notice.

SCSI cards have a port where you can connect a cable inside the case and another port on the back side of the computer. Like you can plug in another cable outside of the computer to an external drive or system of drives. Thats my guess how an external case of SCSI works.

yes ...I built a $9000 server and you can better me also.
have you looked at the cases in the lian li links?
well when it comes to the processing end I still can't find anything more overwhelming than the cray - XD1 (12k)
Folding on this would rank you on top of the stanford list in a matter of minutes!!! (ok maybe a few days!)
Now what would double your fun would be to utilize 12k dual core opertons!
Can you imagine the processor (folding) power of 12k dual core opertons?
    Neither can I!!! LOL
