They keep coming back!

I've tried everything that I know to try. I have run Adware, Spybot, Bazooka, Noadware and something keeps hiding from me. Please let me know what I should do. Many Thanks! Here is my log...

Welcome to Short-Media :) We are happy to help.

You have a lot of unusual file names in your log, so this may take a few passes to get it all right. Let's start with a few known items, and a few others that look suspicious to me.

Boot up in SAFE MODE. Run HJT. Fix the following:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310}_ - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TV Media] C:\PROGRAM FILES\TV MEDIA\TVM.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [8VCPFW] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\8VCPFW.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4THQMFQ5XMTXYD] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Ahm8.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [fash] C:\WINDOWS\fash.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rm5W37e] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\COO2_32.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [8VCPFW.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\8VCPFW.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dsi] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DP-K13W13.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [SSDPSRV] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ssdpsrv.exe

(Unless you are running a web-server or a web-accessible program on your computer, delete this, as it can be used as a trojan. See http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?type=&filter=&count=100&offset=3400 )

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TV Media] C:\PROGRAM FILES\TV MEDIA\TVM.EXE

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WNSC] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wnsintsu.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [TV Media] C:\PROGRAM FILES\TV MEDIA\TVM.EXE

    O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [WNSC] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wnsintsu.exe

Let's start there and see what happens.

Next, you need to manually find and quarintine some of the files associated with the hijacks above. Make a new folder called Quarantine and move any of the DLL or EXE files named above into this folder.

What I recommend is to make a sub folder in Quarintine for DLL files and one for EXE's. Move the DLL's to the DLL folder, and the EXE's to the EXE folder. Then rename the last 3 letters of each file to .XXX. They are now quarintined, but if you fnd you need them for something legit after all, you can easily replace them by renaming them and replacing them in the folder they originially came from.

Reboot your system normally, and check things out. Post a fresh HJT log here, and let us know how it worked out.

Then, check out the links in my signature, and find out about Short-Media's favourite pastime: Folding for a Cure!

Thanks for the help! Now we are getting somewhere! I made all the changes you recommended and quarantined all of the files. Bazooka is still finding IGetNet & MS Media Player GUID. Are those a problem? Everything else seems to be coming back pretty clean. Anything else I need to do? Here is my new HijackThis log:

I'm getting an error now with Outlook and I can't figure out which file or what change we made is effecting it. Any ideas?
  • DexterDexter Vancouver, BC Canada
    edited May 2004
Hmmm, sorry about that, one of those files may have hooked into Outlook. You may have to re-install Outlook, unless you want to try un-quarintining the files above one by one... :(

    As for these others....

    Safe Mode, HJT, Fix:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310}_ - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4THQMFQ5XMTXYD] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\UXNB14Q.EXE

(This guy here has a very random looking file name, and does not come up in any searches, so I am making an educated guess here that it is hijack related.)

Quarantine the file using the same procedure above.

Try that and see what happens.

I'm going to ask another Mod here (Mr Kwitko) to have a look at your outlook problem and see what he thinks.

Post a screenshot of the error message you're getting when trying to start Outlook.
  • edited May 2004
Okay, I removed everything else, but the uxnb14q.exe file wasn't there this time. I noticed a different file in its place...JximoD.exe. There are a few similar exe files that are all hidden files. There names are:

    - AaoG.exe
    - Epq9T5uE.exe
    - HuhTdA.exe
    - Jfpjxd.exe
    - JximoD.exe
    - Kfml8U3.exe
    - KsoyX.exe
    - Msyl6.exe
    - PoleBO3.exe
    - VwvMLFvs.exe

Should I quarantine all of them?

On the Outlook issue...I use software called InBoxer for junk e-mail. I was able to uninstall it and Outlook works. I can't recreate a screenshot since I uninstalled it. But it won't reinstall for the same reason. The exact error I was getting was "Could not load IDTExtensibility COM Interface"

    Thanks!

    I see one major problem:
    C:\WINDOWS\RunDLL.exe (Trojan horse)
Reboot in safe mode and delete this file. I also suggest either an online trojan scan or getting a memory resident anti-trojan program like TrojanHunter ASAP!
  • edited May 2004
I've deleted rundll.exe. How about rundll32.exe? I've also run Trojan Hunter and the files that I was questioning a couple posts ago were Trojans. They are now gone.

I still can't get Outlook to work totally correctly. I'm willing to reinstall it, but I only have my Recovery CDs that came with my system. How do I just reinstall one program?

    Thanks!

...I still can't get Outlook to work totally correctly. I'm willing to reinstall it, but I only have my Recovery CDs that came with my system. How do I just reinstall one program?...

If you open Outlook and click on "Help", then "Detect and Repair" it may help you out. Or at least tell you which file(s) is goobered.

    Good Luck! :)
