need help w/DSL fast

I'm @ work, and I'm trying to get my dad's DSL working with my laptop so I can do my job...

Before I get into the problems, the particular network in question consists of:
Efficient Networks (Siemens) SpeedStream 5861 DSL modem/4-port router
WinME desktop w/P2-400, 320MB, Diamond 450 AGP 16mb
My laptop (see sig) w/XP Pro
Netgear WAB102 DualBand A+B WAP (currently disconnected)

So, I'm trying to get my laptop working on a wired connection using one of the ports on the router, and it's... not... working.

The router is (presumably) set up to auto-assign IPs using DHCP. The problem is it doesn't assign my laptop one. I've tried restarting the router, the laptop, doing a clean install on the laptop... I've checked both the cable on the desktop and the laptop, and they're both straight through ethernet cables, and they're both good, so it's not the cable. It was working last summer, and now it's not, and that's all I know.

I've tried going to 192.168.1.1 in IE on both comps, and neither one finds anything. I've tried pinging 192.168.1.1 and get no response. Waiting for the laptop to give itself an IP using automatic private addressing did nothing, nor did changing the auto ip address to 192.168.1.194... I've pressed the only thing on the router that's got a hole small enough to fit a paper clip/pencil tip into, presuming it's the reset button, with the router both on and off, to no effect. I've changed ports on the router on both computers, and the desktop always works, while the laptop always doesn't. I've checked in the settings and it's set to get an IP via DHCP, so...

Also, I just ran IPCONFIG under a DOS prompt in ME and it worked properly this time. The info is:

IP Address: 10.1.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 10.1.1.254

Going to 10.1.1.254 works; it brings up a login window that requires a username and password. Unfortunately, I think these settings are done by Siemens, as I can't log in. I've also just tried manually assigning the laptop an IP of 10.1.0.3, with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, and a default gateway of 10.1.1.254... no go. No matter what I do, the router refuses to respond to the laptop. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!? :aol: :banghead:

nope. didn't like that one either. also, I can ping the router from the desktop, but I can't from the laptop. I've got one idea... I'm going to try a netgear pcmcia ethernet adapter... does anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks for the help guys, but I figured it out. It doesn't like the internal NIC anymore... sometime near XMas, I broke the RJ45 jack, and so the cables don't stay in by themselves, but that's never been a problem before. I think it may have something to do with when I spilled <1oz of sprite on it a few weeks ago, took it apart, put it back together, and had ~10 screws left over :banghead: :banghead:

Guess I'm gonna have to either send it in or try to fix it... but it's temporarily fixed by using a PCMCIA NIC so...

    Thanks again.

My dad and I rebuilt a 4-banger from a Pontiac Fiero once and when we were done we had a few spare parts. Nothing too bad though, just a couple pistons, a cam, 2 or 3 pushrods. Nah, but seriously we did have a few bolts left over. WOOPS!

I've always looked at having parts left over at the end of a project like this: If it works, they weren't real important then, were they? :D

Left this weird flat almost 1 inch square piece of metal out of a Yamaha 650 twin motor that i rebuilt. Ran fine for a while til it started squeeling (sp) and then seized up tight. OOPS! New pistons, rods, crank, etc.:( :(

Motto: Never buy a Yamaha again!!!:buck:

If you ever have parts left over from re-building something, it only shows that you are more efficient than the original maker. :)
