I dunno what you'll get out of this, but it helps me a lot of times.

(Assuming you're running XP) Go to start, and run. type in cmd and hit enter. At the command prompt type in "ipconfig /release" and hit enter, and then type "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter. (all without the quote of course.) I'm not completely sure those are the exact commands, and someone will correct me if i'm wrong, but they should be right.

What do you mean, change your IP to the wrong one? Where did you make that mistake? More technical details will help as usual.

If you reset a router you can get this, actually, with a Linksys set to DHCP. I've seen some baby routers completely redo DHCP when a computer is first connected to them, also. Some of these baby routers use MAC to determine IP order, once they have MAC recorded in themselves, same MAC gets same IP unless router is reset or in some cases reprogrammed and\or power to it is lost.

Computer no longer matches router's reset DHCP-assigned IP and XP will not always pick up on this problem right away. The release\renew sequence is a good first try actually, and was given correctly to the letter.

Probably what he did was change the IP address number in his router admin page thus the router no longer sees his computer.

Simply plugging the computer into the cable/adsl modem bypassing the router and rebooting the modem and computer would get him online for the immediate moment.

He'd have to go back into the Router admin settings to clear and reassign his computer IP address.

Any time I botch my network beyond repair I use the little reset button on the router. Give that a try, works all teh time for me.
