An 18-year-old high school student has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of creating the Sasser internet worm, police say.

The worm spread through an estimated 18 million computers across the world last week, continually shutting down and rebooting them.

Police say the man was arrested in the northern German town of Rotenburg.

Investigators were searching his parents' home, according to the German newspaper Bild.

No further details have been given about the suspect, who was arrested on Friday.

The Sasser worm quickly spread worldwide after its first appearance on 1 May. Some businesses were forced to shut temporarily so they could clear their systems and update anti-virus protection.

This is a result if it is him. I hope they do a Mitnick and ban him from using a computer for a long long long time...

Too bad - no capital punishment in Germany. Seriously though, what is appropriate punishment for an international, large-scale vandal?

Full restitution of all cost incurred due to the worm.

Once these nitwits see someone stuck with a $100million-dollar bill - and forced to pay the full amount through garnished wages - they might think twice.

I'd love to see an interview fifty years from now with a guy who was arrested as a teenager and spent his entire life trying to pay for his foolishness.

...of course, being nearly 45 years old I'd love to see anything fifty years from now... :vimp:

I think they should just publish his name, address and photo, even if he moves or changes his appearance, every six months or so and let nature take its course.:rant:

Now that would indeed be the English approach: a bit subtle on the surface, but full of irony and drama at the end.

Isn't having his net capped concidered unjust and cruel punishment?

Prof, make him clean up at least 1,000 boxes, then have the gov't give him a job fighting viruses. Half his salary goes to the people for recovery costs. We win better that way.

If you had a 100,000,000.00 bill, tell me how you could possibly make money to pay, honestly, that bill yourself???? Give them something they CAN do, but have to WORK at. If you give them something impossible, and they know it is, they simply give up and get REAL BAD. The dark tunnel has to have an end to get them to even TRY to get rehabbed, and some will not be rehabbable. BUT, some will.
