Nvidia and Epic Demonstrate Unreal Engine 3

edited May 2004 in Science & Tech
Nvidia and Epic Games gave a first public demonstration of the Unreal Engine 3 today at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles. According to the two firms, the game engine will raise the bar of visual quality in 3D games since it is the first game engine to take advantage of Shader Model 3.
To date, the Unreal engines have played a role in the development of more than 70 game titles, including Splinter Cell, America's Army, Deus Ex: The Invisible War, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
This should throw a little fuel on the NVidia/ATI war in which shader model 3 will be relevant or not. -KingFish

NVidia is a "camp", you know.... with a nice fire going in the middle, everyone cuddled around singing Koomby-ya... but ATi on the other hand, owns the Kingdom that is marching it's army across your puny camp!

quick question for everyone.... who ratified the shader model 3 standard? last i checked shader model 2 is the highest ratified by any governing body (that being microsoft with DX9). or is nVidia shooting themselves in the foot again like they did with the 5XXX series of cards usign 'their' directx 9 standard?

Shader Model 3 is a key feature of Microsoft's DirectX 9.0, which offers several enhancements, if compared to the previous versions. For example, the technology now enables dynamic branching, shader anti-aliasing, back-face register and a more complex shader length, which allows greater lighting and procedural materials, according to Micrososft.

You cany even compare the 6800 to the x800 as there totally different.
The X800 is a speed bumped 9800 nothing more with nothing really new over the last generation. The 6800 is a new chipset, new technology.
The performance advantage of SM3 and PS3 over PS2 is apparent in the Unreal 3 Tech demo. There are no real visual quality differences between ps2 and PS3 but performance wise there totally different and this is the main reason Nvidia technology was used in the demos
Dynamic branching, Virtual displacment maps, Ps3 is the future and many new game will be supporting it
    BTW
The 5900 and Fx wasnt a faliure!
I use a FX5900 over my 9800 pro rig anyday
It gives me a far better gaming experiance and works with all my games
FanAtics should really stop living in the past , only the 5800 sucked (and blowed lol)
