Omega Search ...Another one

Once again another thread on this little mongrel of an annoyance. I have had several attempts at this and followed the various advice as listed, however my meagre skills have forced me to cry for real help. OK deep breath....so what do I do to free myself of this #$#$##$ thing. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Short-Media, max5. Actually, it looks like you did a nice job getting rid of Omegasearch, except for a few items. I notice you have Spybot installed, make sure you use the immunization feature.

    Delete the following items:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://best.omega-search.com/panel_search.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://best.omega-search.com/

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://best.omega-search.com/

Rerun HiJackThis to make sure you hit everything.

Mr Kwitko - appreciate the quick response. I have deleted the files as noted, tried it both in Safe & Normal Mode. Run Spybot etc etc and immunized, however this thing is still sticking with me. I have attached a HJT log of both before and after reboot. Hope this isn't too much info. Greatly appreciate the help.

Unless the EXEs and DLLs are hiding, I can't see any traces. Try this, it worked for someone else experiencing the same problem:
Go into Internet Explorer, Tools > Internet Options > Programs and click on "Reset Web Settings. Make sure that "Also reset my home page" is checked.

max5, I'm no expert at this by any means, but this line also looks suspicious to me:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install

I don't know what that is and you might want to get a more seasoned expert to comment on that line like Mr. kwitko or Dexter before you delete it though. :) Definitely try out Mr. Kwitko's last suggestions though.

Augie, you would be a lot better off starting your own problem thread instead of barging into max5's thread here; just start a new thread and copy your post to it and introduce yourself. :) We welcome all you new folks to our little forums here and cordially invite you to check out everything and if you want to help medicine and science out, maybe come run the Folding@Home project with our team. :)

Mudd, nwiz.exe is legit. It's part of nVidia's drivers.
  • edited May 2004
OK, I learned something new today. :) That's why I said to check with an expert(like you or Dexter ;) ) on this. I'm learning more and more about getting rid of this crap so I can help you guys out here, but I'm still pretty much a n00b at it. :buck:

    Mr Kwitko,

Wanted to thank you for your help.

I tried all and had no luck. I thought you might be interested to know that I ended up downloading and running the latest cwshredder. It found and fixed the problem immediatley. This thing apparently uses a hole in Microsofts java software to plant the trojan on your computer and is related to that dreaded Coolwebsearch thing that I have also previously seen.

Once again thanks. I will pass the word about the good work you guys do here.

    Cheers Max
