Omegasearch, have I removed it? Hijack this log, please check

Hi, Thanks for the instructions on spyware removal, I followed instructions on the sypware removal page and this is what my hijack this log looks like now. Is there anything more for me to remove? Also I am getting a win32 dll error every time I boot up. Please advise.
Thanks very much!

Welcome to Short-Media, BeenZapped. You've got a lot of problems in that log. I hate to sound like a broken record, but people need to practice better browsing habits!

Before starting, make sure you place HiJackThis in its own folder in case we have to restore from the backups.

Reboot into safe mode, run HiJackThis, and delete the following:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
Real Player updater. A waste of resources and can be safely deleted.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
QuickTime updater. Can be safely removed to save resources without affecting functionality.

These pay-for-surfing programs usually install tons of spyware. It's not worth the money for the problems you get in return.

An internet pyramid scheme. This is the biggest scam in the world. Most likely another source of spyware.

You really need to evaluate your browsing habits. Joining get-rich-quick schemes is going to do you more harm than good. Anything that offers money for nothing usually is the other way around. It's *you* who gets nothing, and they get your personal information at the expense of your privacy. I urge you to get rid of that stuff otherwise you're going to get bitten. If it's not from you, you better severely limit access to your machine. Someone is putting your privacy at risk.

I suggest running Ad-Aware and/or Spybot after you clean up your log. Install SpywareBlaster to immunize your machine from further infections. All 3 programs can be found here.

Please post a fresh copy of your log when finished.

Thanks, Mr. Kwitko. Really appreciate the advice. We have followed it and below is a new HijackThis log. By the way, we did not intentionally respond to any get rich quick schemes, we are quite sure of that. But thanks for the caution. Would definitley like to prevent this in the future and am also wondering if you have a recommended Antivirus program.

Here is our log. Thanks again SOOOOO much for your help.

    Your new log looks clean.

As for the pay-to-surf, I'm guessing they were part of a drive-by install. Still, it's important to let people know. The message isn't directed at you, per se, but at everyone who has even an inkling to try one of those pay-to-surf programs out.

Have you installed SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, and Spybot yet?
  • edited May 2004
    Mr. Kwitko--
Yes, we've installed all of the programs and have run adaware and Spybot after doing the HiJack This log clean you specified. We also downloaded SpywareBlaster and protected the system with that afterwards. There were about 58 processes running before we did all the steps and now there are 35, much better.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Glad we could help. Now don't be a stranger around here. Short-Media has a lot to offer, including a killer Folding@Home team. What's Folding@Home? Well, in short, it's a project run by Stanford University where thousands of PCs around the world are used to help unlock the forces behind protein creation in order to understand why proteins malform, which leads to diseases like Alzheimer's, ALS, Parkinson's, and certain types of cancer. Read more about the project and our team here.
