Need Advice on Combo CDRW/DBD Drive Purchase

Need your advice please, for the purchase of a CDRW + DVD ROM drive. This is for a budget system, so I'm probably not interested in a DVD burner - just need CD RW and DVD playback ability in one drive. The computer will be for non-technical users, my daughter and her boyfriend. I'd really like to keep the price low, but would want a drive that would be reliable for two years.

For quality and reliability's sake, would I be better off buying separate CDRW and DVD ROM drives?

Please offer your recommendations. Thanks.

Here's the thread for the complete system specification proposal. Would welcome your comments there as well.

only thing is, if the dvd part or the rw part goes bad, ull have to replace the whole unit, probly be easier to have 2 drives for the troubleshooting aspect of the computer, but thats just me :)

Fair enough - valid suggestion. But then, do you have a recommendation for a low cost DVD ROM drive?

i saw ur other post and that dual drive that thrax posted, it was like $45 thats gonna be cheaper than 2 drives,

    a sony 16x for $29, and u suppose about another ~$30-$35 for cd-rw

i dont really know how reliable those combo drives are, but if lite on makes them they are probly really good.

Yup, that was a very good find on Thrax' part - combination CDRW/DVD ROM, Lite-on, for $44.50. Just can't beat that quality/price combination.
