I have a file server, all I need it to do is hold files so I can share them accross 4 computers in my house. What OS is the most stable and need the least amount of restarts. I have 2000 pro, 2000 server, XP pro, 2003 Server EE. What do you guys recomend?

Any of those will do, but 2003 Server EE is overkill just for file sharing.

I'm gonna say it this way-- if all will run, use the one you know most about administrating of the ones you listed. Myself, I would use Linux sftp plus Samba, and admin it with WebMin and lots of knowledge.

I use win2kserver on my server and let me say this ...I have not had one BSOD in almost 2 years ...only reboots have been due to driver and bios updates and the like etc. I believe 2kserver is very stable on hardware it likes and vice versa.

We use 2003 Standard at school, and have been VERY pleased with its performance and reliability.

2003 Server or Linux with Samba.

Both have worked well for my household server cluster (2 PC's) in serving music, video, internet services & *cough* ftp services *cough*. :)

Just set it up as you would a normal peer-to-peer file share and assign a password. Then grant rights to each "account" holder (or "Everyone") that needs to access the share. Anything else will just be overkill.

If I'm addressing this to generically, let me know and I'll provide you with the specifics.
