Proxy.5.X and Proxy.5.Y

A friend of mine copped Proxy.5.X and .Y. AVG removed some infected files but of course not all. Before attcking the machine myself I browsed for information, including ShortMedia, without finding anything about this Proxy trojan. Meanwhile the machine is staying off line. Any pointers anyone? Thanks & regards.

    Try running a scan in safe mode.

    Thanks. I'll do that today.

    A couple of days ago I disabled RESTORE on this XP system, AVG scanned & healed 2 files and then zapped c:\windows\system32\mfyasdiaesdyy.exe as found by HighJackThis, then renabled RESTORE and booted & AVG scanned several times before going on-line and getting the latest MS updates (of course the user had not done this since about last February). The user was happy, I was happy.

    I am now unhappy. She rang a couple of hours ago to say AVG is detecting those Proxy trojans again even though she has not been on-line. Such is life.
