I have some folders Id like to password protect so no one on my network can access them. Is there some software that will lock them so I can only access them with a password.

Easiest way is Linux+Samba+sftp access only-- share on a Linux box or BSD box. Possible to do in XP Pro or NT or 2000 server simply by assigning them as a user owned file area that is shared. Make a user that only accesses a shared area, then password the files to that user's PW.

I'm not gonna write a book until some idea of which path you want to follow comes forth here.

Just setup the permissions on the shared folder so that only the specified users/groups can access them. Just click the permissions button in the sharing tab when you right click the shared resource.

Easy? Only if you want to completely install a new OS.

For Windows XP and 2000 there's a program called Magic Folders. MF makes the folder and its contents invisible on the local machine and to other computers on the network. To view/hide selected material, you enter a password. In DOS though, the folder names and content file names are still visible. Works perfectly in Windows, though.

Right, but since he has 2000 Server, he has all that builtin. I isimply do not have a key by key tut canned for this for server, in notes or books. I do have that for earlier NT, but know enough has chenged that I would have a lot of version changes interfering with that as a literal process so will not present it.

Using groups and user access to shares is easier with a Server O\S than with 2000 Server than with XP of non-server kinds, the functions are native to the server, no other programs needed at all. Server by itself lets you authenticate, do it in secure pipe that cannot be easily sniffed, and has a way to set up subgroups and small area access by tree or by subtree or by specific folder. Linux can also do this very well, as can BSD, simply becuase they were tuned first as server O\Ss from the get-go.

Bud has also played with Linux, which is why I asked him specifically the question-- I did not know if he still had a Linux box running that could server the share, or wnated to. for those without the O\S installed or not knowing it at all, use what you have, sure. Agreed. For those that have it or want to learn it, othr way is better. In this case, I tried to keep to thread starter's needs and wants.

    Base process is this:

Set up an area for sharing on HD, as a specific tree separate from boot and boot drive.

Set up a group that has access to only this area. Call the group ftp or sharers if you want.

Set up a user or users for this area.

The server admin, by nature of that admin group, will have global access including any areas shared to that ID remotely. Bud is server admin, AFAIK. He will always have access by admin ID. So, to limit privs with this kind of service, you set up a group and users that can only access your shared area. make it a new one, not an existing one, the privs in the builtins are wrong for this kind of thing, too easy to give folks too MANY privileges automatically. Same thing that limits works for you this way, if you set up a group that can ONLY access one area.

Group can have only one user if this is simple and planned to not ever be complex. You simply use user and password together to access, not just no user and a password.

OK, I admit my ignorance about server OSes and Linux. :)

just right click that folder u dont want pesky little sisters, or network people to have and select lock folder, enter your password, the _X_ MB\GB folder is not 0 bytes and 0 folders and is a link to the control pannle, it cant be copied, deleted or moved when locked, to open it, double click it, enter the password and it comes back good as new
