Tuning help

Just bought an Athlon 64, and it doesn't seem to be running as fast as I was expecting it to, just wondering if anyone can offer any help / suggestions.

The spec is

Athlon 64 3200+ (not overclocked)
MSI K8T Neo (VIA 4in1 chipset drivers installed)
Radeon 9700 pro (latest catalyst drivers)
1GB RAM
SATA HArd drive (plugged into the VIA SATA controller)
windows XP (32 bit)

I get a score of 4091 in 3DMark, which seems a bit low, and it seems to lag quite a lot in Battlefield Vietnam, whereas my old PC (an athlon 3200+) ran smoothly. So, any ideas?

You might try a different, older video driver... the catalyst 3.7s were (imo) one of the best releases...

nah thats not right, the newest catalysts have been raising the scores. your scores are under what they ought to be. only thing i can think of off the top of my head is to check your ram timings. those can make a huge difference in overall system performance.

hmmm, okay cheers for that, I'll have a look at them tomorrow... don't suppose you could suggest what sort of timings I should be aiming for? I'm using KingMax "turbo" 3200 memory, not sure what my timings are currently set at, I've not fiddled with them at all but I can check tomorrow.

edit: Got my memory timing to 2.5-3-6-3 & switched on the dynamic overclocking mode and now get a 3DMark score of 4878... is that about right or is there something else I could play about with?

edit: okay, 2.5-3-6-3 is unstable, I have to use 2.5-4-7-4 and 5% dynamic overclocking to remain stable.
