Need help abit nf7-s v 2.0 stuck at 850mhz

edited June 2004 in Hardware
I was doing 2.21 MHZ now i cannot get the board to overclock it now runs only in optimised defaults 805 mhz. I have mushkin pc 3200 1 gig "222" special, Antec true 430 psu, Athlon xpm 2600+,Thermalright SLK900-A , Vantec 80x38 Tornado 84 CFM fan.

Can u please tell me whether i need new bios or a mobo.
I went upto 2.51 MHZ before i powered up with cmos clear in 2&3 since then i can only run in optimized default mode at 850 mhz.

I have ordered a bios chip and a i have already ordered and recieved a new ABIT NF7-S V 2.0 board from Newegg.com.
I am waiting for the bios chip from xcaliber.com and the extractor to remove the bios. I am going to first change the bios chip if it works then fine. What do you guys suggest.

before i powered up with cmos clear in 2&3
I interpret that to mean that you performed a CMOS clearing operation 2 or three times, each time followed by a restart? Did you remove the CMOS battery and just let the computer sit for half an hour or so? I've had very confounding BIOS problems before that could only be solved by battery removal - once or twice it took a two-hour wait. Many of the early Abit NF7S 2.0 boards have quirky BIOS issues.

Idid remove the battery but did not wait for 2 or 3 hours maybe i should do that and see what happens. Thanks for the tip will post result.

2 to 3 hours is probably overkill. I have though, had occasion where one hour's removal time was not enough; one and a half did the trick. Something about Abit and BIOS.

Did you put the cmos pin back on normal after you cleared it? Sounds like you left it on clear and it resets each time. More info needed. Can you change the settings at all? Are you saving them? Do you save the changes and it reverts to default? Whats happening...

Whenever i make changes in fsb and multi save and exit, then it fails to go into windows it just starts beeping i long i short continuous beep.
Then i have to power off clear cmos then restart go into softmenu setup and start in optimised defaults anything other than that it boots and the 1 long 1 short continuous beep comes on.
Evertime i clear cmos and put it back on normal default 1&2 after clearing.
Then i go into save and exit.

Have tried default settings - turning off "user defined". I've had the same problem you speak of before with Abit boards. In those instances, the key was running default settings for the CPU and SPD for the RAM. I'd run it for a while, in Windows (hope you can get there), do a complete shutdown, and restart, repeating the process two or three times.

I could be mis-reading this, but it sounds like you're clearing the cmos while the PC is on. This should only be done with the pc off. (Turn off the power, change the CMOS clear jumper to 2&3, wait a sec, change it to 1&2, then turn the computer back on)

Nope, looks like MELSA1 has it right - power off and clear CMOS.

I skimmed through the thread and picked up the basics.

So you're saying no matter what you're stuck at ~800 mhz? You've tried raising it but it didn't work. Did you try changing the multipler. I know with my mobile 2400 whenever i reset the cmos it boots up at 6x multipler or something. You might want to check that out

This was the part that had me thinking that MELSA1 was doing it incorrectly.

Mine boots up 100, 5 x. Any changes i make it will not post just beep code.
Then i have to shut off the machine clear cmos then reboot hit delete on post go into softmenu and enter default mode save and exit. Restart works fine at 800 mhz.

Yes that is what it is doing. I finally got my bios saviour chip today i got to make a bootable diskette and flash. I will post result tomorrow.
