    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Adstartup.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adstartup] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Adstartup.exe

run msconfig (from the run menu) and click on startup and see what's being started. But I'm not an expert.

BTW: I think there's a different section for these things.

Run Ad-Aware and Spybot first, then repost your log. Find them on the Security Downloads page.

Right, but if you follow the links in his thread, they go to sites that are XP-centric.

The main difference in the Win 98 and XP version of the fix is where you scan for system files, and which options you use in one of the removal tools. Instructions for both are there.

1 - Put HJT into it's own folder, eg: C:\HJT. This gives the program a safe place to store backups of removed items in case you need them.

2 - Reboot in SAFE MODE. Run HJT. FIX:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

    O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0B90AA1B-F649-44C3-9FD3-736C332CBBCF} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEENHA~1.DLL

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adstartup] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Adstartup.exe

    O16 - DPF: {87067F04-DE4C-4688-BC3C-4FCF39D609E7} - http://download.websearch.com/Dnl/T_50129/QDow_AS2.cab

3 - Manually locate the .exe and .dll files in the entries above. The one labelled IEENHA~1.DLL will have a longer name that starts with IEENHA.

Move those files to a new folder called C:\Quarantine. Rename the .exe to .XXX and the .dll to .DDD. This way, you can recover the files if you need to.

4 - Reboot normally and see what happens. Come back and let us know.
