AMD To Market Discount Sempron

edited June 2004 in Science & Tech
Advanced Micro Devices will come out with a chip in the second half of the year called Sempron that is geared toward notebooks that cost less than $999 and desktops that sell for under $549.
Sempron will be sold worldwide. AMD did not provide any technical details or specify whether the chip would derive from the older Duron/Athlon/Athlon XP line or the Athlon 64 line.

What a stupid name! Sempron sounds too much like simpleton, which implies stupidity. ;D

According to the article, it's a derivative meant to appeal to latin america as that's where the budget chip market is hot right now.

I dunno, I kind of like the Sempron name.. Though it sounds like a feminine hygiene product, a race car sponsor, or a trace element.

The Duron line for LapTops? Wonder if it will be 64-bit or not. Or rather like socket 754 will become, the 32bit chip with 64-bit disabled.

Well, two years ago we thought the name "Opteron" was goofy too. No one laughs now!
