Help!!!

edited June 2004 in Hardware
Hi, I have a question, when I am on the internet for like 1 hour or more, the window just closes, and when I am working in some 3d programs they sometimes close or won't work, and I was wondering what I can do to fix this, I have a Dell Dimension 2350, with Windows xp, it is an 80GB hard drive and I have only used 42 GB, every week or so I get a notice on my tray where the time is that says windows virtual memory is low some tasks may be denied, what can I do to get more virtual memory, and if it isn't a peripheral how do I install it? TIA

i think you're getting hard disk space confused with memory. if i had to guess, your problem is that you dont have enough ram, and you're overusing your page file (virtual memory). im looking up what type of ram you need right now

/edit/ alright i looked it up and this thing comes stock with 256mb of ddr266, otherwise known as pc2100. it doesnt seem to me that just web browsing should be using up all of that ram though, so will you go ahead and post a hijackthis log, just for kicks?

Download the file found at this site and run the program. It will bring up a list of things that are runnign on your PC that you probably have no idea about. Post the findings here and we can tell you what to do next. Adding RAM is always a good idea but we may be able to increase you page file size to meet your needs. You came to the right place though! :)

First question: Can you confirm the amount of physical memory you have? Click START and then RIGHT CLICK on MY COMPUTER and choose properties. It'll be there on the SYSTEM PROPERTIES - GENERAL tab near the bottom right corner.

Second: In that system properties display choose the ADVANCED tab and then click on SETTINGS in the PERFORMANCE area. CLICK the ADVANCED button and then click CHANGE in the VIRTUAL MEMORY area near the bottom.

What does it say in the PAGING FILE SIZE FOR SELECTED DRIVE area. Is the SYSTEM MANGED SIZE radio button enabled and what are the min-max settings?

256 MB is a bit low for WinXP to be "comfortable" though it will work with 256 MB. 512 MB of ram is preferable. With 3D programs you betchya that 256 MB is a bit low for memory as the page file/virtual memory will be in use. Windows starts to access space on the drive in place of the extra memory it needs and that gets "full" after a while. Even though it's temporary hard drive space in place of RAM...it doesn't always release it for other use...thus the proverbial glass of water...gets full and you get that out of virtual memory error.

You may want to change the virtual memory settings.

Click CUSTOM SIZE and type in 512 as both min and max. Choose SET and then OK for all the next screens. The computer will need to be rebooted.

My biggest recommendation besides that is another stick of 256 MB ram. That will definitely help.

    :)

Thank You every one for your help, Media Man here are those answers: the system properties window says 128 Mb of RAM, the paging file size says 400 mb but I had changed it to that, and the system managed size button wan't enabled, and the min max was 250/450, but again I changed that., I will do that hijacker thing in a little while, and I will post the results first thing. Thank You Again. Ran Hijack this, here is what it found:

    Well.

128 MB of RAM. A wwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bit low don't you think?

Short-Media Rule #1. You can never have enough ram. I would definitely recommend getting 2 x 256 MB of RAM...better yet...2 x 512 MB of RAM. What to do with that 1 stick of 128? Sell it off to a friend.

Ram works better in pairs. Also...depending on how much you want to spend. It may be overkill to get high performance DDR 400 memory. You won't use it effectively.

The choice is yours and 2 x 256 or 2 x 512 MB PC2100 RAM will be a definite improvement.

    New.net. You have spyware!

Run adaware and spybot search and destroy now. Make sure you have a good antivirus software that's kept up to date. Make sure you have all your windows updates.

    KF

//edit: I agree, that is one nasty hijackthis post. You have way too many programs running in background. Once the mess gets cleaned up you'll have a much better performing computer.

If you don't have virus protection with current updates, you can download Avast! Antivirus at www.avast.com - they have a free home version that gives you free updates for 14 months if you register. After 14 months all you have to do is register again to continue to get free updates. Virus scanners and syware removal tools need updates to continue to be effective.

All the spyware removal goodies can be found in one place here: http://www.short-media.com/download.php?dc=69

I used AVG for a while and it was good, but Avast seems to update just as regularly as AVG, and you get more options you can set yourself.

hmm, never heard of Avast. Even at work we put AVG on any machine we work on with out of date anti-virus, and it works like a charm. They have upgraded their servers in the past few months, updates would take forever a while ago, now they are fast as ever.
