And after a bad install...

A friend of mine recently installed XP Pro on a new HD. The install wasn't the smoothest thing going, but it runs...sometimes.

Suddenly, the notice below has begun appearing:

C:\Windows\System32\IMM32.DLL
is not a valid Windows Image. Please check against your instalation disc
(This may not be exactly what it says, but very close)

I ran a Google search, but everything I found points to, this being a 98 or ME problem. Nothing for XP. :shakehead

Anybody have any thoughts?
Thanks for you help, in advance
Dragstk

My replys as to whether any ideas work will come slowly, as I don't see this guy every day. But I will let you know what does or does not work.
Thanks again

Format and install again. If that doesn't work maybe it's a bad installation disc or HDD.

Try this file. Replace the file with my zipped file. Well first copy it someplace else first.

Thanks guys. One problem down, who knows how many more to go.

I totally agree, Black Hawk, Reformat/reinstall is the way to go. But my friend is reluctant to do it. He'd rather fight with all the problems. Go figure.

mmonnin, thanks for the file. Worked just great. Well, worked after a bit. I told him to copy and paste in the new file, after opening the Windows folder. He says it doesn't work. He was trying to cut and copy the Folder with out opening it. DUH! :banghead:

Thanks again, both of you, for your help

You can do a repair install with XP pro and it keeps all his programs and stuff. If his probs on the original install related to hardware getting installed properly you might even try slipstreaming in SP2 onto the install cd as sp2 includes support for a lot of new drivers. I just disable the firewall on sp2 as soon as it comes up but other then that its ran good for me.

Watch to make sure he isnt getting any more corrupted files as it could be harddisk or memory related. Either can cause file corruption.

If there are more problems thats where I would go next. If there are problems after the repair go to memtest.org and test the RAM. Also go to the HDD manufacture website and get a diagnostic tool to test the HDD.

Thanks guys. The first thing I suggested to my friend was a reformat/reinstall. The next was run a repair. As typical as this whole mess has gone, my friend has "misplaced" his instalation disc.
I appreciate every ones help in this, but I washed my hands of it. He sits there and complains about how bad it runs, but won't do anything to fix it, except go back to some restore point. I have offered to take a crack at it, but no go.
Oh well, his choice. The worst thing about all of this, is that this computer is for the business he owns.
    Thanks again, to everyone.

I think he did a forced upgrade, the other ways this can happen I cannot discuss here(not legal). Happy you bailed out on this one(Yeah I read the whole thread). I hate it when friends do this to techs.

Best REAL answer, get a full XP Pro System Builder CD from Newegg, reload from scratch.

To make it legal, do you have to purchase licenses with that to issue to systems you build? I am not familiar with a System Builder Windows CD.

What Newegg sells is CD plus pamphlet\minimanual plus COA (with license key). They are selling complete 3-packs if you want three units, or singles. One authable and reauthable on same box COA per CD. And you need to buy a significant piece of hardware (Motherboard, HD, or CPU qualify, DVD burner is not really something Microsoft would be all over you for if you got one of those with an XP Pro CD) with them to be really complying with Microsoft's dist guidelines for OEM System Builder CDs. For someone who builds a box themselves, this kind of route is decent and Microsoft will not quibble about this particular source as NewEgg complies with the significant hardware purchase guideline reasonably well.

Right now Newegg is shipping SP1A XP Pro CDs, not boxed, less than $140.00 each for Pro at quantity 1. I am a Microsoft OEM System Builder, registered and everything, and Newegg's CDs are indeed legit, one from them is running and authorized on a box here and has been also reauthed once as I changed enough hardware to trigger the 3 day reauth timeout in that box-- I picked up some HDs when I got that one.

Microsoft does not officially bulk license Pro at anything below a high partner level, and does not publicly sell XP Pro licenses in bulk via channels they do not legally go after. XP HOME UPGRADES, those you can get bulk from Microsoft or channel partners, via volume licensing program signup. Some MS-Office components are also available, via volume licensing program.

    One question, John.
What is a "forced upgrade"? This was a legitimate computer, with a new HD. My friend put in his XP Pro disc, that came with the computer and did the install.
By "forced", are you saying, going from an older version of Windows to XP?
    Thanks for the info
