For starters, get rid of every entry that HJT shows with qgwom.dll in it-- unless you know what it does, I would like to know as Google cannot find it and any search of just qgwom gets me Linux results and pages of hex code that could be trojan feeds (I am searching and surfing using Linux and a very tightened down Mozilla 1.7 so I can go freely to pages that might feed unwanted things to Windows boxes). Normally a Google result with no hits AT ALL is a random named file put there by a trojan or worm or virus, or a dev app so new as not to be botted by Google yet-- which normally means that app is in alpha or very early restricted beta form. In any case this is not a common Windows component at all-- the # in that entry tells me that the call is goign to abreakpoint in that dll directly, and normal surfing does not need this at all, and the res tells me this is a local to box .dll so no surfing is needed to utilize it. Breakpoint calls to resident .dlls should only be doen by executables under any circumstances, so this .dll call is to something that is not a normal call nor a legit and known .dll at all. There were no hits for qgwom.dll at all on Google as a full string, and Google asked if I meant Wigwom.dll instead.

I would get rid of all entries with HotFoon4.exe right now also, as well as the entire HotFoon directory, due to this:

    htttp://xforce.iss.net/xforce/10591

HotFoon stores all the user data as plain text in a registry key set, including password and login info. The ISS folks rightly think it is too easy for data like this to get stolen by using another exploit to gt to registry. HotFoon if it still exists no longer takes PayPal payments anyway. If you still know you use HotFoon, you may for now ignore this and explore the registry key at link and see for yourself if stuff is still stored as plain text.

Next thing is vptray.exe-- this, AFAIK is only used in OLD Symantec corporate versions. The ref I have for it is to Version 7 of Corporate NAV, and Version 9+ is out now. Suggest a newer NAV. Do not be surprised if your newer NAV uses Symtray.exe instead-- there is a PROVEN-NAV-compromise-related reason for the name change in some NAV versions. If you have version 9.0 or up of Corporate NAV and it uses this .exe and you know it, I'd like to know. If not sure, leave here for this first pass and someone with 9.0 of Corporate NAV please check theirs and see if it is present and gets called like, this, please.... I do not have a specimen version of Corporate 9.0 NAV or upward to check myself for sure.

I'm going to let Shwaip or another mod discuss the rest and recommend you delete and then run HJT AGAIN to see if things reappear after a restart. I am totally sure the .dll is a rogue process, and do not recommend HotFoon to anyone.

I also know that vptray.exe has been used in spyware also in recent times, partly because folks are reluctant to delete it because it WAS legit at one time and it sits in a Symantec data path. So, it will depend partly on what NAV is on the box in order to have enough data to decide rightly and certainly what to do now with this box's copy of vptray.exe. I think that decision needs to be cooperatively made in this case, and knowing what if any Corporate NAv is running would help a bunch to make that decision.

    Welcome to short-media.

This is the new, stubborn to remove variant of CWS.

Please try the instructions here, and if they don't work, we can take a look at a new log.

    Hi Guys,

I tried removing them with Hijak this. It did not work. Once I reboot it is O.K but after I open the IE explorer, the registry log changes and I am back to step one.

I tried running ad aware, spy bot in safe mode after fixing the log but no use.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you turn off System Restore before you removed the rotten eggs? Otherwise, it may be reinstalling itself from there.

Did you follow the thread from DSLReports that shwaip posted?

I emptied the file uvwcz.dll in the note pad and changed to read only file. Now I get a home page cannot find server which is expected. But It still defaults to the same web address when I refresh the browser.
    res://uvwcz.dll/index.html#96676

I have a pop up blocker installed which is blocking the pop ups when the above default page tries to open.

I am not a computer expert and I am not sure which of the process files are legid and which are bad in the task manager. I have seen Zupe advise to canadian guy5000 and follow the same for my problem. But I am not sure which of the processes I need to end in the task manager.

Reboot in safe mode, run HiJackThis, and post that log here. Make sure you do not reboot again or the filenames might change. I'll let you know which files to remove.
  • edited June 2004
Here is the new log file after booting in safe mode. Unfortunately I cannot follow your advise on not rebooting since I could not connect back to the net. I am hoping once I get your recommendation on files to remove, I can reboot again in safe mode and get rid of the files.

    My new log as follows.

Then, cerate a new folder called :C:\Quarantine. Manually locate all the files named above, and move them into the Quarantine folder. Rename the exe files to .xxx, the .dll files to .ddd, and rename the .html files to .hhhh. That way you can always replace them if it somehow turns out that I am completely wrong and these are necessary files....which is not likely, but quarantining is safer than deleting them.

Reboot normally, and check if that works. Let us know.
