And of course I sold my gigabit fiber cards a couple months ago and now this lands in my lap... You gotta love FREE TOYS

Four port gigabit fiber backbone and 32 10/100 ports. Yep this baby will snuggle right into one of my two racks for sure. I may just convert the smaller 3 foot tall rack to all networking gear as my 8 port SMC gigabit copper switch is rack mounted as is my router anyway. Mine has two slots filled with the 10/100 ports (32 ports total) the pic is of the same model as mine but the one in the pic only has one of the 16 port 10/100 modules.

I know gigabit fiber isnt as popular anymore but Geezzz For friggin free?? I sold my little basic 4 port fiber gigabit switch and 4 cards for like $300. This is a much faster fiber gigabit switch with all the 10/100 ports also?

I can get fiber Intel Pro and 3com pci-x or 64bit/66mhz cards all day on ebay for 20 to 30 bucks a pop anymore.

Free always works for me. He also gave me a APC 500va UPS he wasnt using and it was a hassle to get rid of because he couldn't just throw it away because of the batterys.

I mean WTF?? All this is good working gear they have pulled from service and just don't need anymore and they were going to just throw it away? I'm not goofing on ya. JUST THROW IT OUT...... So being the really swell guy I am I offer to haul it off for them. Save the poor guy a trip to the dumpster with that 40lb switch for example. (grin) They switched off fiber to copper but it worked perfect 4 months ago when they pulled it. I bet that sucker cost three grand new.

Most cheap switchs are not near as fast as the high end stuff like this sucker. It was really designed to be the fiber backbone among enterprise class servers. crap I might have to pick up a couple more gigabit fiber cards to play with (long sigh...) Geez last time I looked I had four 64/66 copper gigabit cards sitting around I wasn't even using as most the new opteron boards now have gigabit built in. Both the k8d's even have dual gigabit for christ sakes. I should sell a couple of them and get some more fiber ones.

Hmmmmmmmm...... I wonder if the same guy already threw away the stinking fiber gigabit cards he was running this sucker with? (big grin)

Tex dashs off to make an emergency phone call before the Dallas trash trucks pick up his crap in the morning........ What a friggin knothead.

Like I need this sucker with my 8-port smc gigabit copper switch I already had... Ahhhhhhh.... I know it sounds childish but ..... It is sort of fun to talk about my home network with a fiber gigabit backbone though.... LMAO

I think "home network" in my case is a stretch with two dual opterons, a single opteron and another AMD64bit computer. Really more of a "lab" based on its usage compared to most home computers.

And... the one in the pic above with only 16 10/100 ports is for sale right now for 99 bucks plus shipping if anyone else finds themselves just having to add 40 pounds of crap to their collection of weird gear.

I do work for guys in big datacenters. Lots of buddys in key positions and most owe me a favor or two over the years for saving their butt along the way. Tons of big companies literaly PAY SOMEONE to haul off piles of this crap when they run out of room or get tired of storing it. And now I get calls when they have interesting stuff going out. (grin) I missed a huge haul off HP laserjet 4 and 5's including the big SI models that do duplex and everything. I mean like a hundred of them. Pulled because they replaced them with lexmarks. But most worked and they PAID A GUY to just haul them off. I thought the guy had a couple lasers and I didnt get over in time. It was over a hundred friggin laser printers.

Then sometimes you just get lucky. One night I was driving to a buddies house (ANOTHER COMPUTER GUY) and he told me to park in back of the house... so its just starting to rain and I pass a big pile of computer gear about four houses up from his in the alley sitting by the trash cans. I look briefly and then tell my buddy (he is a bigger scrounge then me even) and we walk back up the alley and find six hp color lasers sitting there in a pile and his trash cans were filled with brand new color toner for them? Four worked perfect. All had tcp/ip cards and extra ram in them??? We swapped two of them for 21" hitachi and viewsonic monitors and kept the other two good ones and the two others for parts.

Well, put it this way. He's got a friend who runs his earnings through several accounts, some offshore. Tex is also known to change his license plates frequently. Didn't you just repaint your car last week as well, Tex?
