It's only SLI because they can't beat ATI any other way. ;D

But seriously, SLI. God, fond memories. I still have my SLI VooDoo2 12megs. They ran Unreal Tournament better than a single GeForce3 ti500.

I wonder how far this is from becoming a consumer reality? If it's any time soon ATi better pull somethin' out of their @$$ real quick. Maybe SLI X800 Series cards? :kneel:  I hate to say it, but Nvidia may have just done something right! :banghead: :banghead:

only thing I noticed about those cards... in the image there is no 15 dpin out to monitor. All the outs were dvi and svid. If you sell a kidney to buy them, the better throw in a converter...

Just read at [H] the two cards & a motherboard that supports it...will run you $1300. Not to mention a very high quality power supply, and the fact that so far the only boards with two 16x PCI Express slots are dual Xeon boards :bawling: I guess you only need one Xeon for them to work...but still.

hehe So much for "consumer reality"... You could easily spend $2500-3000 building a new system just for this stuff I think. Still though, ATi must do something.

I'm quite sure that ATI will respond and with a product that doesn't require a 750 watt power supply to run the two cards. If this takes off you can bet motherboard manufacturers will be lining up to sell you their boards for a reasonable price once the competition kicks in.

Yeah, just imagine the power requirements of powering a setup with 2 of those PCI-E GeForce 6800 Ultra cards and a Presshott 3.6, not to mention the shear heat output of that mess.

I can think of a lot more practical and efficient ways to spend $1300.

What I want to see is a SLI setup using two ~$250 cards instead of two ~$500 cards.

I hope they do realize how much potential this has and start moving it over to regular boards (478, 775,..and um...amd boards ;D). I think if you have enough money to afford one card, chances are you can afford another...man I wish I could afford even one card lol (of course - single slot would have to be ATi)

I think pretty soon that we'll see consumer 775 boards that support this as I am pretty certain that this is the same technology that Alienware has been keeping such tight lips about.
I think if Intel wants to make a good go of that new formfactor they need to make the sockets last longer than "up to 20 careful insertions" and bring out 775 cpus in the northwood flavor.

You won't see a i925X/i915 motherboard that supports true Dual PCI-Express 16x ports.

On the flagship i925X chipset, there are only 24 PCI Express lanes to the MCH, meaning that with a single 16x PCI-Express port, there will only be enough bandwidth for another 8x port. That is unless they rework the chipset.

Looks like it may be NVidia that arrives first to the scene with dual PCI-Express 16x ports with their NForce 4 (info @ The Inq). :D

Bingo SimGuy, there is no 32 chan PCIe, in any form, from any one. Intel does not have a chipset that will support more than 24 chan for any application.
Though PCIe 8x is still more bandwidth than AGP8x, so I guess that it doesn't matter now.

The only applications for the monster now are pro-graphics. You know, dual Quadros on a dual Xeon mobo. Let's see, mobo, 2 CPUs, ECC memory, two Quadros, looks like about $5k to me.

well also there are many games on the horizon for which the developers were trying to make the tech be top of the line a ways down the road. for example, the EQ2 devs said that they were thinking with all the extra visual options built in, no current graphics card would be able to handle all of its beautiful rendered glory. but i ask them this, what about TWO top of the line graphics cards. eh? eh?
