How is porn or pornography "naughty"? The word's in the dictionary. Now watching it is the bad part for underage kids :p

heck, most of us miss-type it anyway. My mesages look like crap without spell check. You will see me typing hte for the.
References to obscene things are fine, just don't get too descriptive.....

hmm, yes, that word is in the dictionary. So no filter there.

I reckon moXon just wanted there to be a filer that changed the word porn with 'bible music'. I reckon it would be pretty funny at first, but would be totally impractical.

I have a german<->English dictionary with ALL the words in it. All of 'em.;)
  • edited June 2003
I just think it would be funny. I'm not offended by "porn" or pornography. The grammatically inclined will notice that the quotation marks mean the *word* while the un-quotation-marked would mean the actual stuff.

I just assumed that the filter, the same one that made the electronics company Matsu****a, Matsu****a, would be returning

//EDIT: ^ Indeed it is back, Matsush ita

Can we have a vote on disabling the filter for filtering things like Matsu****a? I mean, everyone who registers for the forum has to click the birth-date button to satisfy the COPA rules, and most thirteen-year-olds (hell, most six-year-olds) have heard and/or said most every foul word in the book.

I'm not saying this because I want to have a board full of language that would make George Carlin blush, but I can't stand how practically all forums blank out or * out profanity; it just strikes me as very... juvenile. I mean, really, we are mostly adults or young adults here and I don't think we need to be embarassed by a bit of profanity here and there. Within reason, of course, but I just don't like it being automatically censored.

    Just my two-cents.

Censorship is a pain and not something that is much fun to have decide on.

There are pro's and con's to it in any medium. Consider this..

Say for an example, we have a younger member (we have some you know!) aged 15 nearly 16. Intelligent, courteous and tremendously talented and helpful. We have those as well.

Then his/her parents catch a snip of PC screen one night or go surfing through this favourite bookmarked links. Catches a whole batch of posts containing profanity. Uh oh.

We lose a valuable member and then it carries on. There are more reasons than that but leaving it **** doesn't mean you don't know what it means. Yes we are almost all adults here and we have all heard it before. Some don't mind it and some will.

99% of members can suss what the word is anyway but it keeps almost everyone happy. I don't even notice it. We aren't the only site with a profanity filter either...

Hexus.NET, AMDmb, DeviantPC, SystemCooling.. are just some... they all use a filter too. Infact, alot of sites with filters will still warn you to watch ya language.

It's saves alot of grief in the long run :) We don't quite live in a perfectly tolerant world, so we have to sit somewhere in the middle to appease all.

The filter will stay in place. I do realize that we are mostly adults in these forums and most of us rarely see the need to use profanity.

But there are those that can instigate more trouble than it is worth. This decision comes from experience. It is not a question of freedom of speech or censorship. It is not our intent to violate any personal freedoms you believe in. It is a decision to alleviate some of the problems we have known to occur many times in the past.

If you do not use profanity then this will not affect you in the least. :)

We do know that most members would do just as you say...profanity would be a bare minimum. I'd like that situation as well but I have seen too many matches walk into forums and look for gasoline.

    Shorty & MM:

Your positions are completely understandable, and I respect them. For me, it is more a pet peeve than anything else that causes me to be irritated by word filters. As previously mentioned, I have no burning desire to turn any forum into a swear-athon by my own hand or anyone else's; it's just that something in my ultra-liberal-as-long-as-you're-not-hurting-someone-else-then-go-ahead-and-do-/-say-it thinking is bugged by seeing words censored.

I use the word censor, but I don't mean to imply that you're censoring freedom of speech. The board has rules, you're required to register to post on the board, and to register requires that you agree to live by the rules of the board, therefore, you could require that everyone who join this board be left-handed and therefore I (as a right-hander) would have no right to complain about getting banned if/when my dark right-handed secret was revealed.

Anyhoo, I just had to throw my thoughts out there since I am a big do whatever / say whatever you want kind of guy, but as always, I'll happily live by the rules of the road.

The filters shouldn't bother anyone since they should not detract from your message. IMO, swearing is just excess language and really not required.

If it will keep people on the site then filters are the way to go. Anyways, if you become abusive, you get banned and then the filters won't bother you anymore.

Not to be pickey, but I will. This certianly is the attitude of liberality, and to a great extent I belive the same. Without getting into a political discussion (I already deleated it) I'll leave it there.

At least with asterisks, we can guess with reasonable certainty what it might be ;)

While I hate filters as well, there are quite a few intolerant people in the world, so I understand your position on putting them in.

Could we maybe include text-to-speech on the site that *bleeps* at all -not-commonly-accepted- words?
