AoM: Titans stops running on my notebook.

OK, I've got this weird problem on my notebook. I've got AoM and the Titans expansion installed. After I install the games, I can play the Titans just fine. Until I play any other Microsoft Game that I have on the system. Then I get an "Initialization Failed" error message every time I start the game. I looked up the error and all the fixes stated it's a graphics error. However, I can play the game just fine and it loads as many times as I try to play it, until I play other Microsoft games on that notebook. Currently, I've tried it with Halo and (this is really weird) AoM without the Titans expansion. Either game causes the Titans expansion to choke on load and display this message. The AoM base game still keeps working. The only way I've been able to fix it is to completely uninstall both AoM and the Titans, and to reinstall both. Reinstalling over the current copy does not work.

Here's my notebook specs:
AMD 64 3200+
512MB RAM
Mobility Radeon 9600
1280x800 widescreen
All games patched to latest versions.

Any ideas?

If you haven't already, switch to the ati drivers instead of the emachines drivers. That may or may not help, but it'll make a huge difference in performance.

Download the cat 4.7s and the control panel separately from ATi's site. Then download mobilemod (the developer's site seems to be down; I'll zip and upload the install directory to... somewhere. I'll link you to it when I'm done)

Anyhow, once you've downloaded and extracted mobilemod, and you've downloaded the driver, start installing the driver as normal. Allow it to extract all the files to C:\ATI\wherever or wherever you want to install the driver, and then cancel the install.

Run mobilemod, click "load driver set" and navigate to "C:\ATI\SUPPORT\wxp-w2k-8-00-040322a-014266c (or wherever)\2KXP_INF" and select the CX_... file, and hit "open". Then hit "modify driver".

Once that's done, double-click the cat 4.7 driver and re-start the install. do not let it re-extract the files. It'll say these files already exist and blah blah blah, click "no to all". Continue the driver installation as normal. Once you've installed the driver, reboot if you choose to, and then install the control panel as normal. That will *hopefully* take care of your game problems, and if it doesn't, it'll give you a lot more control over the image quality settings and stuff, and it should do wonders for your graphics speed- I went from 3500 to 5300 in 3dmark2001se on a r7500m when I switched to the regular catalysts.

Thanks Geeky, I'll give that a shot tonight.
