CenDyne... free after rebate at OfficeMax right now for a 48X. CenDyne is usually LiteOn repackaged.

    Link to it!

I hope you get it while it's still in stock, they're flying off the shelves.

Please note, this deal goes away Saturday!

GHoosdum; Really? I didn't know that... What other "generic" brands are LiteOns? I know there are a bunch, but I'm not sure which ones are...

    Disvengeance;
LiteOn has cheap, very fast, reliable drives
Plextor is pretty much the Mercedes of optical drives- they're some of the fastest drives around, reliable, and very, very high quality. Unfortunately, they live up to that analogy in the price department as well. Plextors are very expensive drives ($100+ for top of the line models usually)
TDK is very good, somewhere between LiteOn and Plextor...

I've got Plextor and LiteOn units, and they're both excellent, as are the TDKs that are in my Dad's and Grandfather's systems... MSI, ASUS, HP, Toshiba, Pioneer, Samsung, NEC, Teac, Panasonic and Sony all have very good reputations. Ricoh makes professional-level equipment in other fields (copiers, etc.) so their CD-RW drives should also be pretty good.

Basically, just stay away from generic drives (unless you know they're LiteOns) and you should be fine.

This is what I have, if you need a DVD drive also. It burns pretty fast, and hasn't had any errors ... and its sekc.

The Teac CD-W552E is supposed to be one of the fastest drives around at the moment, and the MSI CR52-A2 is supposed to be one of the best for its price range.

    Cheers

Well I haven't been to cdfreaks for a few weeks but last I new the Liteons are still ranked very highly.
Hovering around 43 bucks or less the 52246S is an excellent drive that can copy just about everything.
I added the now JVC/Liteon LS66 DVD player for a reader.
With this combo I have been able to make backups of all my protected CDs including BF1942 & D2 LOD.
There might be something faster out there but depending on what you want to burn, speed may not be everything....
Also my experience with off brand drives that are manufactured by Liteon but sold by some one else is that there are usually some kind of difference.
There may be some off brand Liteons that the firmware can be flashed to make the drive a real liteon but often times there are subtal differences that make it not as good as an actual Liteon or one that can be flashed.
If you are going to try and make archives of any of your copy protected CDs then I wouldn't mess around, just get a liteon or one of the other top rated CDRWs like Plextor and what not...

    My $.02
