So tempting, so tempting. Gotta save my money though. If I wasn't trying to make it across the pond, I'd jump on it! My current SCSI setup is lackluster to say the least.

may I twist the knife just a little harder then?
here is an atto off a SINGLE scsi drive that normally hits 60,000 on atto on a normal controller....
gtghm said Are these the 493 LSI MegaRaid 1600 Eletes?
If so count me in. What do you need from me?
"g"
They are Dell Perc3's. Same thing. I take them and flash them with the straight LSI bios's. This is what we bought a lot of Five of before that Prime and flintstone and everyone got. Both the dell perc3's and Gateway ADAC controllers are just Elite 1600's with other firmware. I flash them to the latest LSI bios.
If we get these I will test each one and flash the ones that work to the newest LSI bios before shipping. When I test them I attach drives... build a raid array and benchmark it as part of the testing guys so we know both channels on the controller are OK and stuff. I don't just turn it on and see if the bios comes up. I actually test each one thouroughly before giving it the Tex stamp of approval and package them for shipment to you. Last time the whole deal took less then 48 hours to test them and shipp them I think.
If you have not ever messed with scsi we can do a deal Like I did for mediaMan and setup drives, cables termiknators, and the whole deal for ya if ya want. Basicaly you plug it in as per my instructions and I include drivers and everything for ya etc..

Cool sounds like a deal too me...
I like the fact that you'll be putting them through the Tex Olympics.
That would be all I need and the drivers of cource... :grin
I don't have any SCSI drives yet.
I was just holding out to get them until I could find a deal on the SCSI card.
So I'd just get the card now and keep it till I find a deal on drives later...
Let me know what you need, I'm in for sure on this...
Everyone think hard about this one more time as these are not guarateed. We HOPE to at the least get one per person. If we get 7 guys to chip in 50 bucks for a 350 bid and lets say only FIVE work... I'll step down and one other guy will have to also... In this scenario I guess you draw straws BUT the remaining five that get one need to kick in another 20 a piece to pay us back for steppiong back. So your total would be 70 then not 50. But by the same totken we could get lucky and all ten work. So everyone gets one and we sell the other three and you almost get yours for free.
So there is a risk here and everyone needs to see that and gulp hard once and make up you mind once and for all.
I have another buddy that says he is in. I am in for sure.
Anyone that can quote this post I just made so I know you are reading the risks and see what could happen and still wants in should post below here and use the QUOTE BUTTON so I know you read thisand still want in.
You may pay a little over 50 depending on how many work. You may pay almost NOTHING depending on how many work. It works both ways. Do ya feel luicky and still want to play?
Post below and let me know. These list for $1000. Its a gamble but I think its worth it.

Where is a good place to find inexpensive scsi drives?
One of the cheaper stores near me sell an Atlas 10k III 18gb for $95 CDN. Is that a decent price?

Yeoow! Well, if I had a 64-bit slotted motherboard (actually I do, but it's on a POS SGI Pentium 2 box) and money for a couple of SCSI drives, I'd do it. But alas...
Maybe one day I will and I can buy one off you after you've accumulated another dozen or so

I pay 40 to 45 bucks usually on ebay. I don't know the exchange rate etc.. Buit for new drives wikth no shipping etc.. that may be good for canada.

Actaully that pent2 box with 64bit slots would be a sweet server.
I'll trade ya for a dual pnet2/3 board with no 64bit slots?

t1rhino said How many controllers are for sale? How many do you reckon will work?
Would 128mb PC133 work on the controller?
Ten for sale in the auction. The right piece of regular sdram works. They say use ecc. I ran mine on regular sdram for awhile though. As I pointed out it is picky about the chips on it as far as being able to see the total amount of ram correctly.
The gamble is we don't know how many work. Its a crap shoot.
All I can add is that the guy has over 450+ transactikons on eBay and when you look thru the feedback teh only complaint showing just about is his response to someone that bitched and he claimed the guy tried to return a differant drive then the one he sold him as he marks his products. So its hard to know but he seems like a honest seller not a fly by night sorta guy.
We could get very very lucky or .... well you get the picture.
Tex is great at finding these deals but be aware that this lot features items that are not guaranteed. This is at buyer's risk. Tex nor Short-Media are not responsible for items that do not live up to expectations or are DOA. While the lot may be of items that were working at the tiem of pull...they are not 100% guaranteed.
I do know that Tex will most likely spend the time to test and upgrade each controller he gets. He is very good at taking care of people.
Those of you who are purchasing I do know it would help out Tex immensely if cashier's checks or personal checks were mailed to Tex in advance. He, like the rest of us, is not made of money and it is difficult to carry the cost of shipping to up to 10 buyers before receiving checks.
The money does not need sent in advance though. IF we win the bid he takes paypal so that makes it easy for guys in the US anyway, We have a week probably to scrape money together aftfer the bid but the sooner the better and I can't be fronting the money thats why I asked for dependable people that understand the risks inherant in a deal like this and NO short-media is not responsible for dead controllers and stuff. And neither am I guys! Thats why I was looking for guys willing to RISK 50 bucks. The reward is HUGE though.
kanezfan said or they could all crap out and we're stuck with dead controller cards. Not a horrible gamble, depending on how much they end up selling for.
So are you in or lout KAnez?
We got 13 hours to find 4 people. Three if your in. This is probably night time for mackanz. I want to be sure he is in but it may be awhile before we here form him,
If you guys are both in we still need two more guys by my count.
Tex
I got an email from the guy btw... He swears he doesnt know crap about them. He repairs laptops and they were stuck in a bundle of Dell laptops he bought. Was gonna just try and sell them for ten bucks a piece as a starting bid but decided to throw them in a big lot together. He swears he has not tested one and didn't even know how to really test one anyway.
Room for two left then and I think one is on his way to post now.

Tex, how often do deals like this come up? I'm considering taking a spot, but... I don't have the SCSI drives in a system right now, and I don't really have a system to put them in, so I don't need the card. However, if stuff like this doesn't come up very often...
Lst time 5 of us went in and paid $107 a piece for a lot of 5 plus shipping. We paid 500 bucks for 5. We are talking ten for maybe 350 here. Thats what I am hoping anyway. Prime and Paul from teh last round never put them in yet I don't thionk. They just saw a deal and jumped on it when they had a chance.
With all your testing that you have done, would you be able to do a smallish list of drives with a NORMAL ebay price that you would recommend together with this controller?
A list of maybe around 5-10 drives would be an awesome ground for us who don´t know THAT much. I appreciate your help here a lot buddy, i do learn a lot.

Your better off just getting with me Mackanze and I'll show you what to look for in the drive specs. At least what it is that I look for. I watch transfer rate mainly. Either STR or the internal transfer rate.
I would myself only buy maybe 5 differant models right now and due to price I watch for only a couple drives in particular. There are afster ones. I jujst can't afford to play at that level. I have to get ones that are a compromise between price/performance and are also quiet and not to hot. That doesn't leave a long list.
I'm not going to hit the quote button, but you were right on target holding one for me. Methinks you know me too well!! I will state that I am well aware of the risks involved and am also DAMN well aware of the potential rewards!!! Let me know when you've got enough to go forward.
