snort?

Im thinking of running snort to analyze my network and learn a little more. Anyone familair with it?

    Nothing like a bit of SNORTing...................hang on, this isn't the seventies.

    Just make sure you cut the lines really fine......err..I mean I haven't heard of that program. ;)

    its an open source packet logger/IDS package. You better have a spare box to set it up on.

    Run it on a laptop w/ linux. Do you think that your network is unsecure?

    I have Snort running on a Linux box at work. Very nice tool for discovering what kind of traffic you have scooting around your network. It was a bit of a pain to setup but I eventually got there.

    If you are not that familiar with Linux then I suggest you download the installation manual and follow it set by step. Actually, I would follow the manual anyway. :D

    I don't have a link to it at the moment but when I am back at work tomorrow I will get it for you.

    Gentoo keeps packages in their portage, with some helpfull how-to's in their forums. snort + acid seems to be the combo of choice for managing the system. Google will spit out some usefull links too, look for snort and acid.
