is this a 9800 Pro or XT?

I bought the MSI Radeon 9800 Pro, and when I am installing it, it is recognized as a 9800 XT. I noticed on newegg.com that others in their reviews claimed teh same thing, but I figured one of you could explain it to me?

My theory is they, at the factory, either test and flash it to a 9800XT, or that it really IS a 9800XT that they're getting for dirt cheap. Best solution? Don't ask questions!:p You're lucky, I was considering selling my Powercolor 98pro for one of those. Few questions for ya, after you get it settles in: How effective is the hs? Would it even make sense to put a VGA Silencer, or are your temps nice n cool? Nice choice with the card

My system is a bit quieter than before, but I had a ghetto rigged HSF on before. This one looked fine, I thought of putting on some AS5, but I am tired of messing with that kinda stuff. I'll try to OC it later, right now I am trying to find my XP CD and stuff so I can reinstall windows, and I am thinking of deleting all my files and crap too since my HDD is full :P I would hate to go through and organize everything.

Yeh, I guess people usually get core oc's of 440, some people hitting 470-480 :wow2: Next time you're digging around in there, touch the back of the PCB - can you feel almost any heat (while idle or after gaming/benching/running rthbribl for awhile)?

What you got there is a R9800XXL. Its the 9800 pro based on the r360 core (xt core).

You basically got a xt card. Its probably flashed with the xt bios. From what I read you can OC it and it performs almost identical to a actual xt pro card.

    Good purchase...

Why wouldn't there be any heat after a game? That is a kind of odd thing to ask me to test out.

Err, because with my VGA silencer, after gaming for an hour or two straight, it's barely warm ;) I'm wondering how effective their heatsink is, that's all

Ahh ok will do, I plan on trying out some Ghost Recon after my reinstall, just deleting all the crap from my drives... I need to be way more organized with my goodies, all my porn, GONE, and I tell you I had no idea that I had that much LOL!

Done deleting all the crap, hope I didn't delete some inportant stuff, but the way I see things... if you don't ever use it or know about it, then it isn't that important. 60GB's of junk deleted.

And no, not mostly prOn BTW ;) I ain't that freaky.

it's running like a 9800 pro then, the XT is 412/370ish

probalby a R360 core in it though (which is a very good thing)

It doesn't OC well then, I am running 400/373 and just got 6667 as a score in 3D Mark 2003, but in my control panel I dumbed down the graphics to "Optimal Performance". Dunno how well this score is.

Will the AMD CPU drivers for my Athlon 64 speed things up?

WOW! you can't even hit 412?! yikes dude ... my oc is as high as your and i'm running an r350 :zombie:

Yeah well as I have now seen the HSF setup is pretty lame, the HS is in dire need of a good lapping. Other then that I don't really care. After several months of nothing but crashing in any 3D Game, I am glad to have a working card. Though the guy I bought it from I still trust and I know he wasn't working to screw me or anything, I would gladly buy from him again, if I could remember who it was ;) I just remember it being someone big around here.

As is good, it'll be my backup card just in case.

Yeah, you got a 9800pro pcb with a r360 core!.....a great value for the money. it will perform nicely once you get rid of the crappy stock cooler. The stock cooler will barely keep it cool at stock speeds, and since the r360 runs hot anyway I suggest the artic cooler vga silencer and you should easily get 440/450 core....

On a side note, I am jealous b/c i originally had a sapphire 9800pro with an r360 core that died on me within the first two weeks i owned it. Probably b/c of my over-zealous attempt to oc it without adeqaute cooling (i.e. stock cooler). Anyway i rma'ed back to newegg, and i got a r350 in return:buck:....so that kinda sucks, but i can still get a decent oc out of the r350 anyway.

My R9600 hits 440mhz core, but wont go any further... not without it resetting itself and im SURE its not a thermal problem because i have this stock AMD barton cooler on there...

I have the same card and my system temp is decent, anywhere from 27-33 degrees. I have the card all stock but I only get it around 409/360 and still once in a while get a flashing polygon. I was very disappointed with the overclock.

I found the cooler you spoke about for $19.95 here and am very interested. I was going to apply that with some AS5. That should help. Does that effectively cool both the GPU and the memory? I'm not really seeing how it mounts. Does it have special clips for a video card like the MSI Radeon 9800Pro? Also, does it have adjustable speeds from a thermistor or just a switch?

With my vga silencer I get 440/380 and I'm happy with that.
I must have the r360 also.
My previous 9800 pro died and it ran well at 393/393. I rma'd it to newegg and they told me the exact card wasnt being sold anymore so they offered to trade it to this model or take a refund.
    Old card = $225
    New card = $198
BUt ...if I took the new card trade I only had the rest of the warranty left which was about 2-3 months.
So ...I took the refund and bought the new card and got the full year warranty + $25 cash back!!!! Which went to my vga silencer!
The AS5 works great as well.

    I don't leave it o/c'd 24/7 like my cpu.

I recommended the MSI to a friend which he got and is very happy with it. Recognized as XT right away. Clocks up to 450+ and 380+ with + meaning a few more MHz. hits over 42k on Aquamark with just the OC and 2600@ 2.1GHz w200MHz FSB.

I'm looking for the best Aircooling I can get for my MSI 9800Pro. Is there anythign else I should consider besides the VGA Silencer which seems pretty weak to me... I saw some reveiws and it only added like 10 Mhz to the max overclock on average.

That's a good question, if there is something amazingly good for this card compaired to the default cooler, I may have to give it a try, as long as it doesn't cost more than $20, to $30 at most. And if is more than $20, it better be good cooling for the memory as well. :buck:

Although I am running Planetside(and UT2k4) as maxed out as it allows me, 1600x1200x32 all textures high, full details, etc... in my ATi control panel I have it set to maxed out also, with the exception of FSAA which I have at only x2 but with Temporal AA enabled. I don't really like my AA at anything higher than x2, it just looks weird to me.

I think the vga silencer is the best after-market vga air cooler you can buy. Just pair it up with some as5, and you should be good to go. It added 30mhz to my max core oc. From 420 - 450......but i don't run it that high everyday though. Also the vga silencer will help drop your case temps too since it vents all of the hot air out of your case. I lost 2-3 degress C after installing it.

The only thing that i think might give the vga silencer a run for it's money would be a modded cpu hsf.....maybe a small copper or large aluminum something....but your case temps won't drop...

I get a 60mhz oc on my 9800pro ...the oc depends most heavily on the gpu core itself and it is nice to remove as much heat as possible. The reason I went vga silencer is because it removes most of the heat from the core to outside of the case where I wanted it.
For the price you pay for the vga silencer it is hard to beat considering lower case temps and all.

    What is this stuff?

Search "VGA Silencer" on Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/app/SearchProductResult.asp?Submit=Go&DEPA=0

They have different VGA Coolers (not Silencers) by Arctic Cooling, the same company that makes the VGA Silencer, ranging from 17 to 45 dollars, depending on which model and card you have, ATI or NVidia. The VGA Cooler ATI Silencer 1 is $30 for the 9800Pro 128. The VGA Silencer 3 is $17. However, some have Memory coolers and look better but I'm very confused by everything. Anyone have any news on this?

All the prices went up on newegg right after I ordered. The most expensive ones, the model 4 and 5's, went up from $45 to $55 and the model for the msi 9800 pro 128, model ati 3, went from $35 to $40. plus its $6 shipping.

the original vga silencer rev. 3 remains at $17 with free shipping.

These just started selling on newegg a few days ago.
