Hi everyone!

I don't know where to start on this really but I cannot shutdown or restart my computer - it just freezes or hangs up at the 'saving your settings' screen.

Before I found SM, Yahoo's Search Engine took me to a website were they took me to Microsofts Website on how to fix the problem http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q307/2/74.asp&NoWebContent=1 . I followed all the instructions on the Site, I downloaded the 'Restarting Windows XP' update but when I try to install it i get an error (attachment of error message below)

I'v had this problem for months and now my only hope is SM if anybody knows what to do. I do understand that this is a strange problem but it is happening.

Here is my system Info - just incase

I've had similar issues before, and the only way I know of to fix it is to format and reinstall windows. Of course, that's my catch-all solution for ALL Windows problems, so... :-/

Someone else may be able to help you fix it without doing anything that drastic, but that's the only way I know of to do it.

I had the same problem for a few days and it went away. Has happened a few times but still don't know what the cause is. Last time I think all I did was run a registry cleaner. Could also be a problem with SP2 but I don't know if you have that installed.

Hi Black Hawk. I have SP1 and this shutdown problem has been happening for months. If it has something to do with the registry is there any way of cleaning or trying to fix any problems?

    Thanks

You could try doing a repair installation. The only thing the registry cleaner did was remove invalid registry entries. I did another but I can't remember. I read on another forum that another person had a similiar problem and it was Spybot Search & Destroy that was causing the problem. If you have installed, you could try uninstalling it.

This may sound 'DUMB' but I really need your help, please. How could I do a repair installation? And this Shutdown Problem started before I installed SpyBot S&D but I could uninstall it and see what happens.

    Thanks

You start like if you were gonna install XP normally. Before the screen where you usually select the partition you're gonna install to, it searches if there's already a OS installed. It finds XP and it asks if you want to do a repair installation. You hit the key for the repair and it installs XP again but I think it only restores system files. Nothing will get deleted. But before that I suggest you try system restore. If that doesn't work and you have to do the repair installation, I suggest you use Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image to make images of the installation so you don't have to through this again. ;) If all else fails, format :D Start fresh and you can try SP2 too :D

Thank You Black Hawk. I'l try your advice

Just 1 more question, pleae, on formatting since I havnt formatted for 3 years :buck: .

The last time I formatted A C: was on my old computer which had Win 98 SE. When I had finsihed formatting C: I had to reinstall Windows 98 SE along with all of my drives i.e sound card, graphics crad, modem etc.

I now have Win XP Home, if I formatted C: would I need to install windows and any of the drives?....I know, a beginners question but thats why i'm at SM becuase i'm a beginner ;D

    Thanks again...appreciate it

Yeah, you usually have to reinstall the drivers after you format and install the OS.
