ok, i have an NF7-S v2, 2600+ barton 333 (locked), Thermalright SLK-900A with thermaltake smartfan2, HyperX 1gb pc-2700 2-2-2-5, 430 watt true power antec and very good case cooling... Now, i cant get the fsb over 185. Right now i have it runnin at 180 (360 2.08 Ghz) what do i need to do to get it at 200fsb???? timings, voltage, fsb/ddr ratio.... help would really be appreciated thanks guys :)

Its because you have PC2700 RAM. Its rated for 166. So 180 might be a good OC for it. You need some better RAM if you want to go much farther.

i thought u can get it to go 200 :/

Maybe, depends on the stick. What voltage do you have the RAM at? Max it out if you have not done so already. And relax the timings for a higher OC.

ok, right now its at 2.9v runnin at 190mhz (380 @ 2.2ghz) also fsb:dram is 3:3, but the timings are 3-3-3-6 :( do they have to be that low?
  • edited September 2004
Yeah, that's good advice Marc is giving you. Max the vdimm volts to 2.9v and relax your timings to something like 3-4-4-8 and see if you can get faster. If that doesn't work, then run your memory asynchronously with the fsb speed to where your ram is at 166 fsb when the proc is at 200 fsb. That will give you a definite performance penalty though, so try upping the volts and relaxing timings first. BTW, 2.9v won't hurt the ram and Kingston has a lifetime warrantee anyways.;)

EDIT:You posted while I was typing this. ;) Relaxing the timings won't hurt performance near as badly as running the fsb in asynch mode. Since you made 190, try to go to 200 fsb with your present timings and see what happens.

doesnt start windows :/ i used to run at 190 w/ my one stick of kingston valueram pc2700 w/ stock volts while the timings were 2.5-3-3-6. I guess for overall performance gain ill just run at stock volts, 2-2-2-5, at 180fsb 2800+ speeds

Could it be the cpu since it's locked? What about more vcore so that the cpu can go higher in the first place? The locked cpu is a limit. What's your current vcore?

Mac is spot on here. Try starting with 1.8 vcore and see what happens.

it doesnt even boot in 1.8v :( i had one 512 kingston valueram at 190- 2-3-3-6 w/ no vcore changes. the most i can do here w/ no changes is 180...

To really get there.. you are gonna need higher specced ram :(

    Some PC3200 (minimum) or PC3500.

yea i guess... its ok if i dont get it up there cuz im getina 6800 soon so that should help alot. Also ive noticed when i oc, tests say that i gain performance but when im in game it doesnt feel like it

Baller, your HyperX ram is one of the best sticks in the world as it's based on Winbond BH6 (a few 2700 are BH5).
What happens if you use 11,3,2 cas 2.5 instead of 5,2,2,2 which you use now?
Which memory slot have you tried the stick in?

well i am using 2 sticks of 512 on my nf7-s its runnin dual channel.

i also just did a memory test from pcmark04 and i got 2224 at stock speeds, is that good?

I have achieved almost 210 fsb but for regular basis I am runnig on 200 Mhz I think You should be able to do more than that , just a slight increase in voltage 1.7 is max. 1.68 is what i m working on.

Buy some PC3200/3500 and sell that PC2700 to help defray some of the cost. Another option would be to just get a XP Mobile (Stock FSB133mhz) and just OC to the 185mhz level. 200+mhz is nice but you wont see much of a difference in real life usage over what you can do know.

The PC2700 is dual channel, so running it asynch with the CPU shouldn't make any kind of significant difference to performance

It will make a difference due to timing issues, but it's still a great way to see if it's the ram or the proc that is holding your overclock back and it will work ok until you can afford some decent pc3200 ram, if it turns out that the memory is holding your overclock back.

Couldn't agree more. Async is actually a very good tool for testing the overclock of locked cpu's.

i tried the fsb of the proc at 200 and the memory still at 166 and it boots. But it freeze's when it reaches the loading windows screen

P.S is 2224 pcmark04 memory test good for pc2700 1gig dual channel ddr? I dont know why but it sounds low to me...

If it's still locking up with the memory running asynch, then it sounds like you have a wimpy overclocking 2600. If you don't mind spending a few bucks, get a mobile XP like the 35 watt XPM2200 from newegg and sell the 2600 desktop proc. That way, you will get a better processor that is unlocked and should overclock much higher than the 2600 you presently have, plus you don't have to worry about running the fsb as high because you can also overclock with multipliers with the mobiles as well as fsb speed. Newegg has the XPM2200 35 watt procs for $77 right now(just checked it).

As far as the memory bench in PCmark, I have no idea. I'm presently offshore on the rig so I can't check to see what my NF7-S does with it.

Not bad I guess. The absolute max should be 2700 and you got 2224.
