Folding on PIII's?

We just received some PIII 733s to replace some of our older computers.
I know they are not great, but how well will they fold?

I have roughly 85 of them...

add the -advmethods flag will greatly increase your chances.
Show me your client.cfg also and maybe we can make a difference there also.

I have a PIII 633 folding for me now. On a big tinker (230 something points) it does roughly 300-350 PPW. (hehe the only problem there is it takes most of a week to complete a larger wu.) Only 270 PPW now on a 47 pnt gromacs.

Congrats! 85 of them will blow away the competition!

try this configuration then your setup should look like this.
If you have any questions about it let me know.
This type=2 server has been spitting out gromacs with the -advmethods flag ever since the 5.02 client came out. Mine are all currently 242 points.

Only add the "bigpackets=yes" to them if they have 512 MB of ram, t1. On a machine with 256 MB of ram, it will cause a noticable slowdown on everyday apps. Just a word of advice for you.:)

The majority of folding machines under my control are p3's until we get a shipment of 25 or so p4's this next month to replace our old win98 machines. I haven't installed folding on any win98 machines because they are so unstable by themselves that I don't want any stability issues whatsoever to be blamed on folding. The p3's do quite nicely and will hold their own.

Yes. We are deploying them now in batches of 10.
They won't be able to handle the bigunits, but I will try type=2.

PIII 733s to replace some of our older computers
We shudder to imagine what older means.:wtf: Handheld calculators?

And I felt sorry for myself that in my former office one of the computers was an 850 Celeron. Hmm, I bet the 733 PIIIs are faster than that Celeron PoS.

Congrats on the acquisition, though. You will be rockin' on the stats page. :thumbup

Leo, I can tell you firsthand that those P3s are not bad folders at all, and they will smoke a celeron that is 200-300mhz faster than them.

    A p3 750 will outfold a celly 1000

As long as you aren't talking about Tualatin Celeron's, you are right. The Tually's are a whole different story though; just as good as any P3 in their speed range.

This is how I came out of nowhere - I have 40 PIII 633's at my disposal - all are folding 24/7 and considering I fold 25k in 9 days :grr: they do pretty damn good

so PIII's rock in my book - am going to do some tweaking as suggested above to see if I can churn some more WU's through them

I just wish they were all P4s.

The P3s will out fold the P4s, unless you are talking about 3.2HTs.
I fold on my notebook, a 750 P3. It has a big wu right now, 6hrs/frame.
I wish that I had a PM notebook, they fold.

I have a 930 MHz P3 (not folding anymore) that could pull 400 points on a good week. Unless there's a huge performance jump between the coppermines and tualatins, I don't think that could be true in any way, at least beyond the low-end pentium 4s, because my 2.8 HT P4 makes ~250 in a day.

Tualatins are the only really good P3 to be folding on compared to a P4 or Athlon. That is unless you 80+ P3s.;)
