ATi drivers causing problems

Why is it that if you do enough hard resets (using the reset button) on a system with an ATi video card, the driver will eventually boot with the display @ 60Hz? It does this on a 9800XT, two 9700 Pros, and an 8500 on multiple systems with countless windows installs. It thinks it's running at a higher refresh rate, but it's only running at 60Hz, and the only way to fix it is to go and change it from whatever it was set at to another refresh rate.

Why does it do this, and is there any way to fix it short of reinstalling the driver? It's irritating as hell.

Yeah, if anyone else needs the fix though, here it is:
Geeky1: Am I the only one that has this refresh rate issue with ATi drivers?

Geeky1: my nvidia cards don't do it

Geeky1: it's irritating as all hell

Thraacks: No. But it's an easy fix, too.

    Geeky1: what's the fix?

Thraacks: right click desktop -> properties -> settings > advanced > displays > monitor > refresh rate override 60Hz > maximum refresh (your max refresh at the resolution you use)

Thraacks: Then download a program called reforce

Thraacks: And then open it, run it, tell it to autopopulate

    Thraacks: apply the settings

    Thraacks: Reboot

    Thraacks: Problem solved

I think if you check while it's been reset to 60HZ you will find that your AGP is reduced and FW & SBA are off too. Smartgart does a quick system compatability check every so often for AGP speed, FW, and SBA. It records these settings in the driver settings. Hard resets make it think there is a problem so it resets the settings to a more stable configuration. Kinda like video safe mode. You can try clearing it by going into Smartgart on the display settings and checking retest all and reboot. Should fix it.

There has been a long standing issue with going to 60HZ when in DX or OpenGL modes. I generally fix it by going into ATI displays/monitor properties and setting refresh override to "same as desktop" and that fixes it for me since I play my games in the same resolution as my desktop.

I'm just kinda stabbing blindly here, but it sounds good right ? :)
