I DESPERATELY NEED A NEW VIDEO CARD!

And I also need a new PSU, I know I've posted threads like this before but now I'm completely sure that I'm buying one very soon.

If possible please point me in the direction of a PSU that will fit where my current 300 watt one is.

And also what video card I should get.

I'm looking for something in the 9800 pro to xt range.

Oh and I would like to cool my computer more, my intel active monitor showed that my computer overheated yesterday, it was at around 55 celcius or 130 fahrenheit.

So any info on cooling my computer down would be great.

If you'd like pics of my pc just tell me and I'll take a couple.

Thanks.

P4 2.8 @ 3.0, 9800XT stock clocks and 'balanced' performance, 4.9 beta Catalyst (a month or 2 old) scored me 2560 this afternoon. FPS on the 2nd balloon clip was a steady '1' slide show, the 2nd space marine invasion ran a steady '2' fps slideshow.

At the same time, I run Doom3 1024X768 full glory settings with no slowdowns other than a second at the beginning of each new area as it loads.

Just thought I'd share that as I run one of the cards you mentioned wanting. Others will be along shortly with recommendations.

Yeah that's around the FPS I was getting, it read 0-2 the whole time.

The FX 5200 is your problem. It's a budget card on one of the worst mainstream chipsets ever. Don't expect enthusiast performance.

The FX series in its entirety is a rather shameful part of nVidia's history. Designed to surpass the Radeon 9800 series of cards, it often feel far short of its goals.

The problem is, the FX series of cards couldn't do what video card should do quick enough. 3DMark 05 relies heavily on pixel and vertex shaders, which applies special effects (Like a metallic effect, or something glowing, or the appearance of a rough texture) to scenes and the objects in those scenes.

The FX series of video cards CANNOT, will not, and never will be able to properly render pixel and vertex shaders. It simply cannot do it. The card was engineered so poorly, it physically can't do it. So any game or program that relies heavily on pixel/vertex shaders.. Such as 3dmark 05, or doom 3, or Half Life 2.. Simply won't run quickly with an FX card on it.

In addition to this, the cards themselves are physically slow. It has a poorly-contrived architecture for the purposes of gaming. The direct competitors to these cards, the 9600, 9600 Pro, 9800 Pro, 9800 XT are significantly faster when compared to the direct nVidia competitor.

So you have a chipset that's incapable of doing rudimentary necessities, you have a chipset that's designed poorly, and then they slapped it on one of the slowest cards of the two most current generations: Now you have a 5200.

Just to add... the Radeon 9600XT has been smacking the 5900 Ultra around in 3DMark05 on identical systems.

But Thrax is right. The GeForce FX 5200 is one of worst cards ever made in terms of its' abilities. Even previous generation GeForce 4 Ti's offer faster performance than the GeForce FX 5200 (in DX 8 applications).

3DMark05 hardly scales at all with CPU power. You can have the fastest CPU on the planet, but if your 3D accelerator is of low quality, you aren't going to get a high score as 3DMark05 looks primarily at the power of your 3D accelerator.

So far, ATI cards have been punishing NVidia cards in the new benchmark (I've seen FX-53 & X800 XT PE systems scoring higher than 7700 in 3DMark05.)

X800-based systems have shown the best scores with a new set of "Hot Fix" drivers from ATI that are floating on the web.

GeForce 6-based systems have shown the best scores with a beta set of Detonator 67.00's or 66.70's (again, available on the web).

I will have enough money for a new video card after saturday, as well as a new PSU.

I saw this new PSU in the newest issue of pcgamer.

500 watts, I can't recall the name but i'll get back to you.

The wattage is virtually meaningless; quality is much more important.

    Okay, I found the magazine.

And here's a link to what I believe I can afford after this weekend.

    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=14-130-203&DEPA=0

    ^^^eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800GT Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 256-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "256-A8-N344-AX" -RETAIL

    http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=273002&ps=ho10

    That's the PSU I'm considering.

    ----

Only 2 questions I have are:

    1. Can my mobo support this video card [ intel d865 perl ]?

    2. Can that PSU fit in my case? [i currently have 300 watts atx ]

    Okay now I'm annoyed.

That video card unless I get the doom 3 package [$25 more and i already have doom3]
is sold out on both zipzoomfly and newegg.

    argh!
  • edited October 2004

You have a stock 300 Watt generic PSU. Any single fan, single PSU will fit where that one does.

To the card issue: Try NVidia WHQL driver pack or a newer pack, for a possibly much smaller increase in speed than a newer card might have-- the 5200 is like a GF 3-4 Ti with more detail, it is not very fast. As for the card you want.... Circuit City???? AFAIK they stock XTs or Pros. The one near me does, anyhow. Also Best Buy, and I think TigerDirect and eBuyer have them.

I bought a 6800 from newegg and a 500 watt ultraproducts psu with dual 80 mm fans.

My computer has gone done 10-20 degrees fahrenheit idling, and 10 degrees less while gaming.

The card hasn't come yet though, this is just with the psu installed.
